Speed Sensor Circuit
When using LEXUS hand-held tester:
- Check speedometer value.
PREPARATION:
- Connect the LEXUS hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn ignition switch ON and LEXUS hand-held tester main switch ON.
- Select the DATA LIST mode on the LEXUS hand-held tester.
CHECK:
When driving the vehicle, check that parameter value of "Speedometer" changes on the screen of the LEXUS hand held tester.
NOTE:- Be sure to safely route all cables when driving with the tester connected to the vehicle (i.e., keep cables away from feet, pedals, steering wheel and shift lever).
- 2 persons are required when test driving with the tester: 1 person to drive the vehicle, and 1 person to operate the tester.
OK:
The speed displayed on the screen of the tester changes as the vehicle speed changes.
OK: Replace combination meter.
NG: Go to next step
- Check harness and connector between combination meter and ABS ECU (A/T), combination meter and speed sensor (M/T) (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE
).
NG: Repair or replace harness or connector.
OK: Check speed sensor circuit and ABS ECU (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING (ABS WITH EBD & BA & TRAC & VSC SYSTEM - DIAGNOSTICS) and HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING (ABS WITH EBD & BA & TRAC SYSTEM - DIAGNOSTICS) ).
When not using LEXUS hand-held tester:
- Check ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING on DTC P0500 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR "A" DTC P0503 VEHICLE SPEED SENSOR "A" INTERMITTENT/ ERRATIC/HIGH

OK: Replace combination meter.
NG: Go to next step
- Check harness and connector between combination meter and ABS ECU (A/T), combination meter and speed sensor (M/T) (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE
).
NG: Repair or replace harness or connector.
OK: Check speed sensor circuit and ABS ECU (See HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING (ABS WITH EBD & BA & TRAC & VSC SYSTEM - DIAGNOSTICS) and HOW TO PROCEED WITH TROUBLESHOOTING (ABS WITH EBD & BA & TRAC SYSTEM - DIAGNOSTICS) ).
