Instrument Panel Safety Pad Sub-ASSY: Replacement
HINT:
- COMPONENTS: SEE COMPONENTS
- Installation is in the reverse order of removal.
- A bolt without a torque specification is shown in the standard bolt chart (see STANDARD BOLT ).
- TABLE OF BOLT, SCREW AND NUT
HINT:
The bolts, screws and nuts, necessary for installation and removal of the instrument panel, are shown in the illustration below with alphabet code.
- SHIP MODE SETTING (W/ CD CHANGER) (SEE REPLACEMENT )

- DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL (SEE PRECAUTION
)
HINT:
- Disconnect the battery negative terminal with the steering column assy extended.
- Be sure to extend the steering column, otherwise the steering column cover cannot be removed.
- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- REMOVE SWITCH & VOLUME CASE (SEE OVERHAUL )
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER NO.2 (SEE OVERHAUL )
- REMOVE HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL )
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL
)
- SST 09950-50013 (09951-05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05021)
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER (SEE OVERHAUL )
- REMOVE SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSY (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD GARNISH SUB-ASSY
- Using a screwdriver, disengage the upper/lower 2 claws inside the instrument panel safety pad garnish sub-assy.
HINT:
Tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL CENTER LOWER
- Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws and remove the instrument cluster finish panel center lower.
HINT:
Tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connector.
- Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws and remove the instrument cluster finish panel center lower.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL END
- Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws and the clip and remove the instrument cluster finish panel center end.
HINT:
Tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connector.
- Using a screwdriver, disengage the 2 claws and the clip and remove the instrument cluster finish panel center end.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSY NO.1
- Remove the 2 screws < N >.
- Disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument panel under cover sub-assy No.1.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- REMOVE COIN BOX ASSY
- Pull the parking brake and remove the 2 nuts from the coin box assy.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 claws and remove the coin box assy.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- REMOVE OUTER MIRROR SWITCH ASSY
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 claws and remove the outer mirror switch assy.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 claws and remove the outer mirror switch assy.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY NO.1
- Remove the 2 bolts and the screw < N >.
- Remove the 2 bolts < D > and the hood lock control cable assy.
- Disengage the 4 clips and remove the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy No.1.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL AIR BAG ASSY LOWER NO.1 (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL UNDER COVER SUB-ASSY NO.2
- Disengage the 4 clips and the 2 claws and remove the instrument panel under cover sub-assy No.2.
- Disconnect the connector.
- REMOVE Instrument PANEL GARNISH SUB-ASSY RH
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and remove the instrument panel garnish sub-assy RH.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- REMOVE GLOVE Compartment PLATE
- REMOVE GLOVE Compartment HOLE COVER
- Disengage the 6 claws and remove the glove compartment hole cover.
- REMOVE GLOVE Compartment DOOR ASSY W/Instrument PANEL AIRBAG ASSY LOWER NO.2
- Remove the 3 bolts < J > and the 3 screws.
- Disengage the clip and remove the glove compartment door assy w/instrument panel airbag assy lower No.2.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL LOWER CENTER
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument panel finish panel lower center.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connector.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument panel finish panel lower center.
- REMOVE PANEL INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH LOWER
- Remove the 3 screws < N >.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and remove the panel instrument cluster finish lower.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- REMOVE RADIO RECEIVER ASSY W/BRACKET (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE TEMPERATURE CONTROL SWITCH ASSY
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 claws and remove the temperature control switch assy.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connector.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 claws and remove the temperature control switch assy.
- REMOVE TEMPERATURE CONTROL SWITCH ASSY
- Use the same procedure described in the prior step.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY CENTER (W/ LEXUS NAVIGATION SYSTEM)
- Remove the 4 bolts.
HINt:
Be careful not to drop the bolts when removing them from the display.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assy center.
HINt:
- Remove the multi-display together with instrument cluster finish panel sub-assy center.
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the 4 bolts.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL SUB-ASSY CENTER (W/O LEXUS NAVIGATION SYSTEM)
- Remove the 2 bolts.
HINt:
Be careful not to drop the bolts when removing them from the display.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and remove the instrument cluster finish panel sub-assy center.

- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- Remove the 2 bolts.
- REMOVE FRONT PILLAR GARNISH LH (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FRONT PILLAR GARNISH RH (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE RH (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE SHIFT LEVER KNOB SUB-ASSY
- turn the shift lever knob sub-assy counterclockwise and remove the shift lever knob sub-assy.
- REMOVE CONSOLE PANEL SUB-ASSY UPPER
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and remove the console panel sub-assy upper.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- Disconnect the connector.
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 4 clips and remove the console panel sub-assy upper.
- REMOVE CONSOLE UPPER REAR PANEL SUB-ASSY
- Using a screwdriver, disengage the 4 claws and remove the console upper rear panel sub-assy.
HINt:
tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- REMOVE CONSOLE BOX CARPET
- REMOVE REAR CONSOLE ARMREST ASSY
- Remove the 2 bolts < G >.
- Slide the inner tray forward and remove the 4 bolts < G > and the screw < N >.
- Disconnect the connectors.
- Disengage the 2 clips and remove the rear console armrest assy.
- REMOVE CONSOLE BOX
- Remove the 2 bolts < G > and the 4 screws < N >.
- Disconnect the connector and remove the console box.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER FINISH PANEL
- Remove the 2 clips.
- Pull the instrument cluster finish panel away from the dash.
- Disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument cluster finish panel.
- REMOVE COMBINATION METER ASSY
- Remove the 4 screws.
- Disconnect the connector and remove the combination meter assy.
- DISCONNECT STARTER W/SMART SWITCH ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL )
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL
)
- SSt 09921-00010
- DISCONNECT PARKING BRAKE RELEASE CABLE SUB-ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL PLATE
- Remove the bolt < D >, the 2 nuts < V > and the instrument panel plate.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY W/REINFORCEMENT ASSY
- Disconnect the connectors.
- Disengage the clamps.
- Remove the 2 earth bolts.
- Remove the 3 bolts < E >, < K > and the 4 nuts < U >.
- Disengage the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy from the reinforcement assy.
- Remove the 8 bolts < C >, < D > and loosen the bolt < A > indicated by the arrow shown in the illustration.
- Remove the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy w/reinforcement assy.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL WIRE
- Remove the 8 screws < N >.
- Disengage the clamps.
- Remove the instrument panel wire.
- REMOVE DEFROSTER NOZZLE ASSY
- Remove the 3 screws < N >, the 2 clips and the defroster nozzle assy.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL REINFORCEMENT ASSY
- REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT ASSY
- Remove the 2 screws < N > and the heater to register duct assy.
- REMOVE NETWORK GATEWAY ECU
- Remove the 2 screws < N > and network gateway ECU.
- REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO.2
- Remove the 2 screws < N > and the heater to register duct No.2.
- REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO.4
- Remove the 2 screws < N > and the heater to register duct No.4.
- REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO.3 (W/ LEXUS NAVIGATION SYSTEM)
- Remove the 2 screws < N > and the heater to register duct No.3.
- REMOVE HEATER TO REGISTER DUCT NO.3 (W/O LEXUS NAVIGATION SYSTEM)
- Remove the 3 screws < N > and the heater to register duct No.3.
- REMOVE SIDE DEFROSTER NOZZLE DUCT NO.2
- Remove the 2 screws < N > and the side defroster nozzle duct No.2.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL MOUNTING BRACKET NO.1
- Remove the screw < N > and the instrument panel mounting bracket No.1.
- REMOVE METER HOOD RETAINER NO.1
- Remove the screw < N > and the meter hood retainer No.1.
- REMOVE NAVIGATION ANTENNA ASSY (W/LEXUS NAVIGATION SYSTEM) (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE FRONT NO.2 SPEAKER ASSY (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE DEFROSTER NOZZLE GARNISH NO.1
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and remove the defroster nozzle garnish No.1.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SPEAKER PANEL SUB-ASSY NO.1
- Using a moulding remover, disengage the 2 clips and remove the instrument panel speaker panel sub-assy No.1.
HINt:
- Use a screwdriver if a moulding remover is not available.
- tape up the screwdriver tip before use.
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SPEAKER PANEL SUB-ASSY NO.2
- Use the same procedure described in the prior step.
- REMOVE FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ASSY CONNECTOR (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY
- INSTALL FRONT PASSENGER AIRBAG ASSY CONNECTOR
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSY W/REINFORCEMENT ASSY
- Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy w/reinforcement assy with the 9 bolts < A >, < C >, < D >.
- torque: 20 N.m (204 kgf.cm, 15 ft.Ibf)
- Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy w/reinforcement assy with the 3 bolts < E >, < K > and the 4 nuts < U >.
- Install the 2 earth bolts.
- Connect the connectors.
- Engage the clamps.
- Install the instrument panel safety pad sub-assy w/reinforcement assy with the 9 bolts < A >, < C >, < D >.
- INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL
)
- SSt 09921-00010
- INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL AIR BAG ASSY LOWER NO.1
- Connect the connectors.
- Engage the clip and install the glove compartment door assy w/instrument panel airbag assy lower No.2 with the 3 bolts < J > and the 3 screws < N >.
- torque: 10 N.m (102 kgf.cm, 7 ft.Ibf)
- INSTALL SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSY (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- CENTER SPIRAL CABLE (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL )
- STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT
- INSTALL HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE OVERHAUL )
- CONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE TERMINAL
- INSPECT HORN BUTTON ASSY (SEE REPLACEMENT )
- INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT (SEE DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM )
- PERFORM INITIALIZATION (SEE INITIALIZATION )
