        SPEEDOMETER - USA

        Standard Indication Allowable Range
        20 mph 18 to 24 mph
        40 mph 38 to 44 mph
        60 mph 56 to 66 mph
        80 mph 78 to 88 mph
        100 mph 98 to 110 mph
        120 mph 118 to 132 mph

        CANADA (km/h):

        SPEEDOMETER - CANADA

        Standard Indication Allowable Range
        20 km/h 17 to 24 km/h
        40 km/h 38 to 46 km/h
        60 km/h 57.5 to 67 km/h
        80 km/h 77 to 88 km/h
        100 km/h 96 to 109 km/h
        120 km/h 115 to 130 km/h
        140 km/h 134 to 151.5 km/h
        160 km/h 153 to 173 km/h
NOTE: Worn, under inflated or overinflated tires will increases the error margin of the speedometer.
      2. Check the deflection width of the speedometer indicator.

        Reference: Allowable range +/- 0.5 km/h (0.3 mph)

If the result is not as specified, the speedometer may have a malfunction.

  2. CHECK OUTPUT SIGNAL OF VEHICLE SPEED
    1. Check the output signal waveform.
      1. Remove the combination meter, but do not disconnect the connector.
      2. Using an oscilloscope, check signal waveform of the combination meter.
        OUTPUT SIGNAL OF VEHICLE SPEED

Tester Connection Tool Setting Vehicle Condition
        C8-19 (S1) - Body ground 5 V/DIV, 20 msec./DIV Vehicle running

OK: As shown in  Fig 1

        HINT:

As vehicle speed increases, the wave length shortens.

If the result is not as specified, the speedometer may have a malfunction.

  3. CHECK TACHOMETER
    1. Check the operation
      1. Connect a tune-up test tachometer, and start the engine.
        NOTE:
        • Do not reverse the connections of the tachometer. This will damage its transistors and diodes.
        • When removing or installing the tachometer, be careful not to drop or strike it.
      2. Compare the test tachometer values with the vehicle tachometer values.

        DC 13.5 V, at 25°C (77°F)

        TACHOMETER
