On-Vehicle Inspection
- INSPECT MASS AIR FLOW METER
- When using the hand-held tester: Inspect operation.
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Blow air into the MAF meter, and check that the air flow value of the CURRENT DATA changes.
If operation is not as specified, check the MAF meter (See INSPECTION ), wiring and ECM.
- When not using the hand-held tester:
Inspect operation.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Connect the positive tester probe of the voltmeter to terminal VG of the ECM, and the negative tester probe of the voltmeter to terminal E2G of the ECM.
- Blow air into the air flow meter, and check if the voltage fluctuates.
If operation is not as specified, check the MAF meter (See INSPECTION ), wiring and ECM.
- When using the hand-held tester: Inspect operation.
- CHECK MASS AIR FLOW METER (MAF meter) NOTE:
- Perform the MAF meter inspection by following the procedures below.
- Only replace the MAF meter when both the LONG FT#1 value and MAF value in the DATA LIST (with the engine stopped) are not within the normal operating range.
- Perform confirmation driving pattern.
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Turn the tester on.
- Clear the DTCs (see DTC CHECK/CLEAR ).
- Start the engine and warm it up with all accessory switches off (until the engine coolant temperature is 75°C (167°F) or more).
- Drive the vehicle at 31 mph (50 km/h) or more for 3 to 5 minutes. *1
- Allow the engine to idle for 2 minutes. *2
- Perform steps *1 and *2 at least 3 times.
- Read value using the hand-held tester (LONG FT#1).
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / LONG FT#1.
- Read the values displayed on the tester.
Standard value:
Within -15 to +15 %
If the result is not within the specified range, perform the inspection below.
- Read value using the hand-held tester (MAF).NOTE:
- Turn off the engine.
- Perform the inspection with the vehicle indoors and on a level surface.
- Perform the inspection of the MAF meter while it is installed to the air cleaner case (installed to the vehicle).
- During the test, do not use the exhaust air duct to perform suction on the exhaust pipe.
- Turn off the engine (do not run the engine).
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Turn the tester on.
- Select the following menu items: DIAGNOSIS / ENHANCED OBD II / DATA LIST / PRIMARY / PRIMARY / MAF.
- Wait 30 seconds, and read the values on the hand- held tester.
Standard condition:
Less than 0.27 g/s
- If the result is not as specified, replace the MAF meter.
- If the result is within the specified range, inspect the cause of the extremely rich or lean air fuel ratio (see DTC P0171 SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 1); DTC P0172 SYSTEM TOO RICH (BANK 1); DTC P0174 SYSTEM TOO LEAN (BANK 2); DTC P0175 SYSTEM TOO RICH (BANK 2) ).
- INSPECT THROTTLE BODY
- Check for an operating sound.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- When turning the accelerator pedal position sensor lever, listen to a running sound of the motor. Also, check that there is no friction sound.
If operation is not as specified, check the throttle control motor (See INSPECTION ), wiring and ECM.
- Inspect the throttle position sensor.
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- When turning the accelerator pedal position sensor lever to the full-open position, check the throttle valve opening percentage (THROTTLE POS) of the CURRENT DATA.
Standard throttle valve opening percentage:
60% or more
If the result is not as specified, check the accelerator pedal position sensor (See DTC P2120 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "D" CIRCUIT; DTC P2122 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "D" CIRCUIT LOW INPUT; DTC P2123 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "D" CIRCUIT HIGH INPUT; DTC P2125 THROTTLE/PEDAL POSITION SENSOR/SWITCH "E" ), wiring and ECM.
If the hand-held tester is not available, measure the voltage between the terminals (VTA1 - E2, VTA2 - E2) of the ECM connector (See TERMINALS OF ECM ).
- Inspect the air assist system.
- Start the engine and check that the MIL does not light up.
- Warm up the engine to the normal operating temperature.
- Switch the A/C compressor from ON to OFF, and check the idle speed.
Idle speed (Transmission in neutral): 700 +/- 50 rpm
NOTE: Perform this inspection while no electrical load is applied.
- Perform the driving test.
- Check for an operating sound.
- INSPECT ACCELERATOR PEDAL POSITION SENSOR
- Connect the hand-held tester to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Check if the voltage (ACCEL POS) of the CURRENT DATA indicates the standard value.
- Accelerator pedal released: 0.5 to 1.1 V
- Accelerator pedal depressed: 2.6 to 4.5 V
- Check if the voltage (ACCEL POS #2) of the CURRENT DATA indicates the standard value.
- Accelerator pedal released: 1.2 to 2.0 V
- Accelerator pedal depressed: 3.4 to 5.3 V
If the hand-held tester is not available, measure the voltage between the terminals (VPA - EPA, VPA2 - EPA2) of the ECM connector (See TERMINALS OF ECM ).
- INSPECT CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSY
- Connect the hand-held tester (with CAN VIM) to the DLC3.
- Turn the ignition switch ON.
- Start and warm up the engine.
- Connect the hand-held tester and select VVT from the ACTIVE TEST menu.
- Check the engine speed when the OCV is operated by the hand-held tester.
Idle speed: 650 to 750 rpm
OK:
CAMSHAFT TIMING OIL CONTROL VALVE ASSYCondition Specified Condition VVT system is OFF (OCV is OFF) Normal engine speed VVT system is ON (OCV is ON) Rough idle or engine stalled
