System Description

  1. GENERAL
    1. The steering lock system consists of a starter switch, interlock cable, steering lock actuator, and steering lock ECU. The steering lock ECU is built into the steering lock actuator.
    2. This system is provided in models with a smart key system.
  2. STEERING LOCK ECU
    1. The steering lock ECU is integrated with the immobilizer ECU and controls both steering lock and engine immobilizer.

The theft deterrent ECU checks the ID code of the ignition key and transmits its signal to the steering lock ECU. Then, the steering lock ECU transmits an engine start authorization signal to the ECM and a motor activation signal to the steering lock motor.

  3. STARTER SWITCH
    1. The starter switch consists of a starter switch knob and a rotor. The tip of the interlock cable is fitted into the groove on the rotor. When the starter switch knob is turned, the rotor turns, pulling on the interlock cable fitted into the rotor groove.

  4. STEERING LOCK ACTUATOR
    1. The steering lock actuator consists of a steering lock motor, gear, cam, steering lock bar, and starter switch lock lever.

In the steering lock system, the steering lock motor operates in accordance with signals from the steering lock ECU. This causes the gear to rotate as well as the cam that is integrated with the gear, and the cam pushes the steering lock bar up, disengaging it from the steering lock holder.

  5. INTERLOCK CABLE
    1. The steering lock actuator and the starter switch are connected by the interlock cable and thereby they operates as shown in the table below.
    INTERLOCK CABLE FUNCTION - OUTLINE

    Function Outline
Preventing the engine from being started before the steering lock system is unlocked Because the steering lock bar prevents the starter switch lock lever from moving before the steering lock system is unlocked, the starter switch knob cannot be turned, preventing the engine from being started.
Preventing the activation of the steering lock system during engine operation When the engine is operating, the steering lock bar is locked because the starter switch lock lever and the steering lock bar are engaged, preventing the steering lock system from activating.
