Steering Column Assembly: Disassembly

NOTE: When using a vise, do not overtighten it.
  1. REMOVE VGRS ACTUATOR 
    1. Loosen the boot clamp.
    2. Remove the bolt and place matchmarks on the intermediate shaft and main shaft.
    3. Disconnect the VGRS actuator with hole cover.
    4. Remove the thrust stopper.
    5. Disconnect the VGRS actuator wire harness clamp from the plate.
    6. Remove the boot from the VGRS actuator.
    7. Remove the No. 2 lower cover.
  2. REMOVE TRANSPONDER KEY COIL WITH KEY CYLINDER LAMP ASSEMBLY 
    1. Remove the screw and transponder key coil with the key cylinder lamp.
  3. REMOVE CONNECTOR BRACKET 
    1. Remove the bolt and connector bracket.
  4. REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN PROTECTOR 
    1. Remove the bolt and No. 1 steering column protector.
  5. REMOVE TURN SIGNAL BRACKET 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and turn signal bracket.
  6. REMOVE POWER TILT MOTOR 
    1. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the support stopper bolt.
    2. Remove the stopper spring and No. 1 stopper.
    3. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 tilt steering bolts and power tilt motor.
    4. Using a screwdriver, remove the 2 E-rings.
    5. Remove the 2 support stopper bolt bushings from the power tilt motor.
  7. REMOVE NO. 1 TILT STEERING ADJUSTING NUT 
    1. Set SST, plate washer (36 mm outer diameter) and bolt (6 mm normal diameter, 1.0 mm pitch, 50 mm length), as shown.

      SST 09910-00015 (09911-00011, 09912-00010) 

      Reference:

      Plate washer 90201-10201

      Bolt 91111-51050

    2. Remove the 2 tilt steering shafts by using the sliding hammer on SST.
    3. Remove the No. 1 adjusting nut.
    4. Remove the 2 support stopper bolt bushings from the No. 1 adjusting nut.
  8. REMOVE POWER TELESCOPIC MOTOR 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and power telescopic motor.
    2. Remove the telescopic steering column cable.
  9. REMOVE COLUMN UPPER BRACKET AND COLUMN UPPER CLAMP 
    1. Remove the column tube stopper.
    2. Using a centering punch, mark the center of the 2 tapered-head bolts.

    3. Using a 3 - 4 mm (0.12 - 0.16 in.) drill, drill into the 2 bolts.
    4. Using a screw extractor, remove the 2 bolts, column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
    5. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 telescopic lever lock bolts.
    6. Remove the 2 telescopic steering wedge lock springs, 2 steering lock wedges and column upper bracket and column upper clamp.
  10. REMOVE COLUMN TUBE SUPPORT 
    1. Remove the bolt.
    2. Remove the column tube support with tube attachment.
    3. Remove the tube attachment from the column tube support.
  11. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ENERGY ABSORBING PLATE 
    1. Using pliers, remove the 2 energy absorbing clips.
    2. Remove the 2 energy absorbing plates and 2 energy absorbing guides.

  12. REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING SLIDER SUPPORT 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and telescopic steering slider support.
  13. REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING BUSH 
  14. REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING SLIDER 
  15. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN BRACKET SPACER 
  16. REMOVE TELESCOPIC STEERING SCREW 
    1. Remove the nut, 4 energy absorber cushions, 2 bearings and telescopic steering screw.
  17. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER TUBE SUBASSEMBLY WITH MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a screwdriver, remove the lower side snap ring from the main shaft.
    2. Using a hexagon wrench, remove the 2 tilt steering bolts and column upper tube with the main shaft.
    3. Remove the column upper tube from the break away bracket.
    4. Remove the 2 support stopper bolt bushings from the column upper tube.
    5. Remove the 3 bushings from the break away bracket.
  18. REMOVE STEERING MAIN SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using SST, compress the compression spring.

      SST 09950-40011 (09958-04011) 

      NOTE: Do not bend the universal joint of the shaft assembly more than 20°.
    2. Using a snap ring expander, remove the upper side snap ring.
    3. Remove the main shaft from the column upper tube.
    4. Remove the compression spring and bearing thrust collar from the main shaft.
