General Maintenance

  1. INSPECT STEERING LINKAGE 
    1. Check the steering linkage for looseness or damage.

    Check that:

    • Tie rod ends do not have excessive play.
    • Dust seals and boots are not damaged.
    • Boot clamps are not loose.
  2. INSPECT STEERING GEAR HOUSING OIL 
    1. Check the steering gear housing for oil leakage.

    If leakage is found, check for cause and repair it.

  3. INSPECT DRIVE SHAFT BOOTS 
    1. Inspect the drive shaft boots for clamp looseness, grease leakage or damage.
  4. INSPECT BALL JOINT AND DUST COVER 
    1. Inspect the ball joints for excessive looseness.

      HINT:

      In order to stop vehicle height control for the vehicles with the air suspension system, press the height control OFF switch and make sure that the height control OFF indicator light is illuminating before jacking up the vehicle.

      1. Jack up the front of the vehicle and place wooden blocks with a height of 180 to 200 mm (7.09 to 7.87 in.) under the front tires.
      2. Lower the jack until there becomes about half a load on the front coil spring. Place stands under the vehicle for safety.
      3. Check that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead, and block them with chocks.
      4. Using a lever, pry up the end of the lower arm, and check the amount of play.

      Maximum ball joint vertical play: 

      0 mm (0 in.) 

      If there is any play, replace the ball joint.

    2. Check the dust cover for damage.
  5. ROTATE TIRES 

    (See TIRE AND WHEEL SYSTEM )

  6. INSPECT TRANSAXLE FLUID 

    (See AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID for U151E and AUTOMATIC TRANSAXLE FLUID for U151F)

  7. INSPECT TRANSFER OIL (for 4WD) 

    (See TRANSFER OIL )

  8. INSPECT REAR DIFFERENTIAL OIL (for 4WD) 
    1. Remove the filler plug and feel inside the hole with your finger. Check that the oil comes to within 5 mm (0.20 in.) of bottom edge of the hole. If the level is low, add oil until it begins to run out of the filler hole.

    Grade:
