On-Vehicle Inspection

  1. INSPECT AIR-FUEL RATIO COMPENSATION SYSTEM
    1. Check the heated oxygen sensor output voltage (waveform) (see TERMINALS OF ECM ).
    2. Bank 1 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor 1: Check for malfunctions in the heated oxygen sensor system (air-fuel ratio compensation system), including the circuit and all other related areas (see DTC P0130, P0150, P2195, P2196, P2197, P2198: OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT (BANK 1 SENSOR 1), OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (BANK 2 SENSOR 1), OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL STUCK LEAN/RICH (BANK 1 SENSOR 1), OXYGEN SENSOR SIGNAL STUCK LEAN/RICH (BANK 2 SENSOR 1) , DTC P0133, P0153: OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT SLOW RESPONSE (BANK 1 SENSOR 1)/(BANK 2 SENSOR 1) and DTC P0134, P0154: OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT NO ACTIVITY DETECTED (BANK 1, SENSOR 1)/(BANK 2, SENSOR 1) ).
    3. Bank 1 sensor 2, bank 2 sensor 2: Check for malfunctions in the heated oxygen sensor system (air-fuel ratio compensation system), including the circuit and all other related areas (see DTC P0136, P0138, P0156, P0158: OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION (BANK 1, SENSOR 2)/(BANK 2, SENSOR 2), OXYGEN SENSOR CIRCUIT HIGH VOLTAGE (BANK 1, SENSOR 2)/(BANK 2, SENSOR 2) ).
  2. INSPECT FUEL CUT OFF RPM
    1. Increase the engine speed to at least 3,000 rpm.
    2. Using a sound scope, check the injector operation noise when the accelerator pedal is released.

OK: When accelerator pedal is released, injector operation noise stops momentarily and then starts again soon after.

  3. INSPECT EVAPORATIVE EMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM
    1. Start the engine. Disconnect the vacuum hose as shown in the illustration.
    2. From the hand-held tester ACTIVE TEST mode, select PURGE VSV. Check that a vacuum occurs at the VSV port.
    3. Exit ACTIVE TEST mode and reconnect the vacuum hose.
    4. From the hand-held tester ECU DATA MONITOR mode, select PURGE VSV. Check operation of the purge VSV.
    5. Warm up the engine and drive the vehicle. Confirm that the purge VSV is turned from OFF to ON.

  4. INSPECT EVAP SYSTEM LINE
    1. Warm up the engine to the normal operating temperature and stop the engine.
    2. Install a vacuum gauge to the EVAP service port on the purge line.

  5. VISUALLY INSPECT HOSES, CONNECTIONS AND GASKETS
    1. Check for cracks, leaks or damage.

    HINT:

Removal or problems with the engine oil dipstick, filler cap, PCV hose and other components may cause the engine to run improperly.

  6. INSPECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR
    1. Bank 1 sensor 1, bank 2 sensor 1: Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
    2. Measure the heater resistance of the sensor.

      Standard:

      TESTER CONNECTION AND SPECIFIED CONDITION

      Tester Connection Condition Specified Condition
      1 (HT) - 2 (+B) 20°C (68°F) 5 to 10 Ω

If the result is not as specified, replace the sensor.

    3. Bank 1 sensor 2, bank 2 sensor 2: Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
    4. Measure the resistance of the sensor.
