Automatic Transmission ASSY: Replacement

  1. DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    CAUTION: Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat pretensioner activation.
  2. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR BRACE CENTER (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  3. REMOVE RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER LH (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  4. REMOVE RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER RH (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  5. DISCONNECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  6. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE ASSY (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  7. REMOVE FRONT FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR NO.1 (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  8. REMOVE PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  9. REMOVE PROPELLER W/CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSY (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  10. DRAIN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Remove the drain plug and gasket, and drain ATF.
    2. Install a new gasket and the drain plug.

      Torque: 20 N.m (205 kgf.cm, 15 ft.lbf) 

  11. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  12. REMOVE ENGINE UNDER COVER NO.2 
  13. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR RH 
    1. Remove the bolt, nut and suspension member brace.

  14. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LH 
    1. Remove the bolt, nut and suspension member brace.

  15. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and suspension member brace.

  16. REMOVE EXHAUST PIPE NO.1 SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and support bracket.

  17. REMOVE W/ CATALYST CONVERTER ASSY 
    1. Remove the 6 nuts, 2 gaskets and 2 converters.

  18. REMOVE TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the oil level gage.
    2. Remove the bolt and oil filler tube.
    3. Remove the O-ring from the oil filler tube.
  19. REMOVE OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Using SST, disconnect the outlet and inlet tubes.

      SST 09023-12701

    2. Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.

  20. DISCONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSY 
    1. Move the shift lever to N.
    2. Remove the nut and disconnect the rod.

  21. REMOVE TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Remove the nut and the control shaft lever (with shifting rod) from the park/neutral position switch.

  22. SUPPORT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY 
    1. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.

  23. REMOVE ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts, 4 nuts and engine rear mounting member.

  24. DISCONNECT CONNECTOR 
    1. Tilt down the transmission.
      NOTE: Make sure that the cooling fan does not come in contact with the fan shroud.
    2. Disconnect the PNP switch connector.
    3. Disconnect the transmission wire connector.
    4. Disconnect the 2 speed sensor connectors.

  25. DISCONNECT WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Remove the 3 bolts and 3 clamps.
    2. Disconnect the wire harness.

  26. REMOVE FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Remove the 2 bolts and flywheel housing under cover.

  27. REMOVE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY 
    1. Turn the crankshaft to access each bolt.
    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench and remove the 6 bolts.

    3. Remove the 10 bolts.
    4. Separate the transmission and engine.

  28. REMOVE ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR NO.1 
    1. Remove the 4 bolts and engine mounting insulator.

  29. REMOVE TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY 
  30. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY (See  INSPECTION   ) 
  31. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSY 
    1. Install the torque converter clutch to the automatic transmission.
    2. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension A between the transmission and end surface of the drive plate.

      Standard: A = 22.28 mm (0.8772 in.)

    3. Using a vernier caliper and a straightedge, measure the dimension B shown in Fig 19. Check that B is greater than A (see step  b).

      Standard: A + 1.00 (0.03937 in.) mm or more

  32. INSTALL ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR REAR NO.1 
    1. Install the engine mounting insulator to the transmission with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 11.5 N.m (117 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf)

  33. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSY 
    1. Install the transmission to the engine with the 10 bolts.

      Torque: 

      72 N.m (730 kgf.cm, 53 ft.lbf) for 17 mm head 

      37 N.m (380 kgf.cm, 27 ft.lbf) for 14 mm head

    2. Hold the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench, and install the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.

      Torque: 48 N.m (490 kgf.cm, 35 ft.lbf) 

    HINT:

    First install the black bolt, and then install the 5 bolts.

  34. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING UNDER COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing under cover with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 18 N.m (185 kgf.cm, 13 ft.lbf)

  35. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Install the wire harness.
    2. Install the 3 clamps with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 5.0 N.m (51 kgf.cm, 44 in.lbf)

  36. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER SUB-ASSY 
    1. Install the engine rear mounting member with the 4 bolts and 4 nuts.

      Torque: 

      11.5 N.m (117 kgf.cm, 8 ft.lbf) for nut 

      25.5 N.m (260 kgf.cm, 19 ft.lbf) for bolt

  37. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Install the control shaft lever together with the shifting rod and nut to the park/neutral position switch.

      Torque: 15.7 N.m (160 kgf.cm, 12 ft.lbf)

  38. INSTALL FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSY 
    1. Temporarily connect the rod to the connecting rod swivel with the nut.

  39. INSTALL OIL COOLER TUBE 
    1. Loosely install the tip of the oil cooler outlet tube to the automatic transmission by hand.
    2. Loosely install the tip of the oil cooler inlet tube to the automatic transmission by hand.
    3. Install the 3 clamps with the 3 bolts.

      Torque: 5.4 N.m (55 kgf.cm, 48 in.lbf)

    4. Using SST, tighten the inlet and outlet tubes.

      SST 09023-12701

      Torque: 44 N.m (450 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf) 

    HINT:

    Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 30 cm (11.81 in.).

  40. INSTALL TRANSMISSION OIL FILLER TUBE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Coat a new O-ring with AFT, and install it to the oil filler tube.
    2. Install the oil filler tube to the transmission with the bolt.

      Torque: 12 N.m (122 kgf.cm, 9 ft.lbf) 

    3. Install the oil level gauge.
  41. INSTALL W/ CATALYST CONVERTER ASSY 
    1. Install 2 new gaskets, 2 converters with the 6 new nuts.

      Torque: 62 N.m (630 kgf.cm, 46 ft.lbf)

  42. INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE NO.1 SUPPORT BRACKET SUB-ASSY 
    1. Install the support bracket with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 43 N.m (440 kgf.cm, 32 ft.lbf)

  43. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE SUB-ASSY 
    1. Install the suspension member brace with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 58 N.m (590 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbf)

  44. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LH 
    1. Install the suspension member brace with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 58 N.m (590 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbf)

  45. INSTALL FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR RH 
    1. Install the suspension member brace with the bolt and nut.

      Torque: 58 N.m (590 kgf.cm, 43 ft.lbf)

  50. INSTALL PARKING BRAKE CABLE HEAT INSULATOR (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  51. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR HEAT INSULATOR NO.1 (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  52. INSTALL EXHAUST PIPE ASSY (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  53. CONNECT HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  54. INSTALL RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER RH (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  55. INSTALL RR SUSPENSION MEMBER BRACE REAR LOWER LH (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  56. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR BRACE CENTER (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  57. INSTALL PROPELLER W/ CENTER BEARING SHAFT ASSY (See  OVERHAUL  ) 
  58. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
  59. PERFORM INITIALIZATION (See  INITIALIZATION  ) 
    NOTE: Certain systems need to be initialized after disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal.
  60. INSPECT AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID (See  ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION   ) 
  61. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 

    Fluid type: TOYOTA ATF T-IV 

  62. CHECK FOR EXHAUST GAS LEAKS
