System Outline

* The pre-collision seat belt (PSB) can be retracted by a motor to optimize the restraint performance of the seat belt in an emergency. It operates based upon signals from the pre-collision sensors (Millimeter wave radar sensor + distance control ECU) and skid control ECU with actuator.

* The skid control ECU with actuator sends trigger signals to the seat belt control ECU through CAN communication when it detects certain vehicle conditions such as a spin, under-steer or sudden braking. The seat belt control ECU activates the PSB upon receiving these signals.

* The pre-collision sensor detects an on-coming vehicle or object on the road ahead using a millimeter wave radar and uses information from the distance control ECU such as the position, speed and on-coming route of the object to determine in advance whether a collision is unavoidable or not. The distance control ECU also sends signals to seat belt control ECU through CAN communication to activate PSB motor to retract the seat belt before a crash. This function can operate even when the vehicle speed is 0 km/h if the conditions are right.

* If the pre-collision system (Hereinafter called PCS) experiences a malfunction, 'CHECK PCS SYSTEM' is shown in the meter on the multi information display. The warning lamp exclusively for the PCS will then be lit up. If the system is not available, such as when dirt is on the radar, 'PCS NOT AVAILABLE NOW' will be displayed and the warning lamp will blink.
