Steering Column Assembly: Removal

- PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD
- REMOVE FRONT WHEEL LH
- DISCONNECT CABLE FROM NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL
- Disable the AUTO TILT AWAY function by changing the customize parameter (See CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS
).NOTE: Record the current customize parameter setting (whether the AUTO TILT AWAY function is enabled or disabled) in order to restore the current setting after finishing the operation.
HINT:
Performing the above operation causes the AUTO TILT AWAY function to be disabled when the engine switch is turned off.
- Turn the engine switch on (IG). Operate the tilt and telescopic switch to fully extend and lower the steering column assembly.
- Turn the engine switch off and disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal.NOTE:
- Wait at least 90 seconds after disconnecting the cable from the negative (-) battery terminal to prevent airbag and seat belt pretensioner activation.
- When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (See INITIALIZATIONINITIALIZATION ).
- Disable the AUTO TILT AWAY function by changing the customize parameter (See CUSTOMIZE PARAMETERS
).
- REMOVE FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL LH (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE LOWER INSTRUMENT PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE NO. 2 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE NO. 3 LOWER STEERING WHEEL COVER (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE STEERING PAD (See REMOVAL ).
- REMOVE STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY
- Remove the steering wheel assembly set nut.
- Put matchmarks on the steering wheel assembly and main shaft assembly.
- Using SST, remove the steering wheel assembly.
SST 09950-50013 (09951 -05010, 09952-05010, 09953-05020, 09954-05011)
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN COVER
- Remove the 2 screws.
- Disengage the 2 claws to remove the lower steering column cover.NOTE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.
- Disengage the claw to remove the upper steering column cover.
- REMOVE TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH
- Disconnect the connector.
- Using a screwdriver, disengage the claw and pull out the tilt and telescopic switch.NOTE: Pushing on the claw too hard will break the claw.
HINT:
Tape the screwdriver tip before use.
- REMOVE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Disconnect the connectors from the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly.
- Using pliers, grip the claws of the clip and remove the turn signal switch assembly with spiral cable sub-assembly from the steering column assembly.
- REMOVE NO. 1 AIR DUCT SUB-ASSEMBLY
- Disengage the 2 claws and remove the No. 1 air duct sub-assembly.
- SEPARATE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
- Remove the bolt and slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly.NOTE: Do not separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.
- Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the power steering link assembly.
- Separate the steering intermediate shaft assembly from the power steering link assembly.
- Remove the bolt and slide the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
- REMOVE STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY
- Remove the clamp from the steering column hole shield.
- Disconnect the connectors and wire harness clamps from the steering column assembly.
- Remove the bolt, 2 nuts, and steering column assembly.
- REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY
- Put matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft assembly and the steering main shaft.
- Remove the bolt and the steering intermediate shaft assembly.
