Steering Column Assembly: Installation

  1. HANDLING PRECAUTIONS FOR STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY 
    • Be careful that the No. 2 seal lip or boot does not turn outward while carrying or installing the steering actuator assembly. If installing a new steering actuator assembly, make sure that the spiral center lock pin is securely inserted.
    • Do not use the steering actuator assembly if it has been dropped.

  2. CONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY 
    1. Make sure that the power steering link assembly is centered.
    2. Install the steering actuator assembly.
      1. If installing a new steering actuator assembly : Install the steering actuator assembly with the white paint on the upper surface of the spiral case facing down.
        NOTE: Do not pull out the center lock pin.

      2. If reinstalling the removed steering actuator assembly:
        1. Slowly turn the spiral case clockwise until it locks.
        2. Turn the spiral case two turns counterclockwise from the lock position.
        3. Align the slit of the sliding yoke with the alignment mark (↑).
        4. Install the steering actuator assembly with the white paint on the upper surface of the spiral case facing down.
        5. Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the column hole shield.
          NOTE: Do not turn the actuator body and the spiral case.

    3. Install the clamp to the steering column hole shield.

  3. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the steering column with the 4 nuts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (260 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) 

    2. Connect the connectors and wire harness clamps to the steering column.

  4. CONNECT STEERING ACTUATOR ASSEMBLY 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator assembly and the main shaft.
    2. Install the bolt.

      Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)

  5. INSTALL STEERING SLIDING YOKE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    NOTE: Make sure that the steering link is centered performing this step.
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering actuator and steering sliding yoke.
    2. Temporarily install the bolt.

      HINT:

      Do not tighten the bolt.

    3. Align the matchmarks on the steering sliding yoke and the power steering link.

    4. Install bolt (A) and tighten the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 35 N*m (360 kgf*cm, 26 ft.*lbf)

  6. INSTALL MAIN SHAFT LOWER DUST COVER 
    1. Connect the connector and wire harness clamp to the steering actuator assembly.

      HINT:

      If a new steering actuator assembly was installed, pull out the center lock pin and tighten the clamp of the actuator after this step.

    2. Install the main shaft lower dust cover with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 7.5 N*m (77 kgf*cm, 66 in.*lbf)

  7. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD 
  8. INSTALL TURN SIGNAL SWITCH ASSEMBLY WITH SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the turn signal switch with spiral cable to the steering column with the clamp.

  9. INSTALL TILT AND TELESCOPIC SWITCH 
    1. Attach the claw to install the tilt and telescopic switch.
    2. Connect the connector.

  10. INSTALL STEERING COLUMN COVER 
    1. Attach the 4 clips to install the steering column cover upper onto the instrument panel cluster finish panel.
    2. Attach the claw to install the steering column cover upper.

    3. Attach the 2 claws to install the steering column cover lower.
      NOTE: Do not damage the tilt and telescopic switch.
    4. Using a screwdriver, install the 3 screws.

      Torque: 2.0 N*m (20 kgf*cm, 18 in.*lbf)

  11. ADJUST SPIRAL CABLE SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  12. INSTALL STEERING WHEEL ASSEMBLY 
    1. Align the matchmarks on the steering wheel and steering main shaft.
    2. Install the steering wheel set nut.

      Torque: 50 N*m (510 kgf*cm, 37 ft.*lbf) 

  13. INSPECT STEERING WHEEL CENTER POINT 
  14. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR DUCT 
    1. Attach the 2 claws to install the No. 1 air duct.
  15. INSTALL DRIVER SIDE KNEE AIRBAG ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  16. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 1 SAFETY PAD SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  17. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL NO. 1 UNDER COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  18. INSTALL INSTRUMENT SIDE PANEL LH  (See INSTALLATION )
  19. INSTALL FRONT DOOR OPENING TRIM COVER LH  (See INSTALLATION )
  20. INSTALL FRONT DOOR SCUFF PLATE LH  (See INSTALLATION )
  21. INSTALL INSTRUMENT PANEL FINISH PANEL END LH  (See INSTALLATION )
  22. INSTALL CONSOLE UPPER PANEL SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  23. INSTALL FRONT CONSOLE UPPER PANEL GARNISH  (See INSTALLATION )
  24. INSTALL STEERING PAD  (See INSTALLATION )
  25. INSTALL NO. 3 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER 
  26. INSTALL NO. 2 STEERING WHEEL COVER LOWER 
  27. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (See INITIALIZATION ).
  28. INSPECT STEERING PAD  (See INSTALLATION )
  29. INSPECT SRS WARNING LIGHT 
    1. Inspect the SRS warning light (see DIAGNOSIS SYSTEM ).
  30. PERFORM VARIABLE GEAR RATIO STEERING SYSTEM CALIBRATION 
    1. Perform variable gear ratio steering system calibration (see INITIALIZATION  ).
