Automatic Transmission Assembly: Installation

  1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the torque converter clutch (see INSPECTION  ).

  2. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a vernier caliper and a straightedge, measure dimension A between the transmission and the end surface of the drive plate.

    2. Aligning the matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter clutch, engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.

    3. Engage the splines of the stator shaft and stator while turning the torque converter clutch.

      HINT:

      Turn the torque converter clutch approximately 180°.

    4. Turn the torque converter clutch and align the matchmarks on the torque converter clutch and transmission case to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter clutch.
      NOTE: Do not push on the torque converter when aligning the matchmarks.

    5. Using a vernier caliper and a straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration and check that B is greater than A measured in the first step.

      Standard: 

      A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or more

  3. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Install the transmission control shaft lever with the nut.

      Torque: 16 N*m (163 kgf*cm, 12 ft.*lbf)

  4. INSTALL NO. 1 ENGINE REAR MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the engine rear mounting insulator with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 30 N*m (306 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf)

  5. INSTALL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the automatic transmission to the engine with the 10 bolts.

      Torque: Bolt A 

      71 N*m (724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf) for 17 mm head bolt 

      Bolt B 

      37 N*m (377 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) for 14 mm head bolt

      NOTE:
      • Insert dowel pins into the dowel holes securely so that the end face of the automatic transmission assembly fits close against the engine assembly before tightening the bolts.
      • Make sure that the dowel pins are not loose, bent, damaged or scratched and then install the transaxle onto the engine with the contact surfaces of the engine and transaxle flat against each other.
  6. CONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR 
    1. Install the nut and wire harness clamp.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)

    2. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector.

    3. Install the 2 bolts and wire harness clamp.

      Torque: 10 N*m (102 kgf*cm, 7 ft.*lbf)

    4. Connect the transmission wire connector.

      HINT:

      Push up the lever until the claw of the transmission wire connector makes a connection sound.

  7. INSTALL ENGINE REAR MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Install the engine rear mounting member to the automatic transmission assembly with the 4 nuts.

      Torque: 13 N*m (132 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the engine rear mounting member to the body with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 26 N*m (265 kgf*cm, 19 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Tilt up the automatic transmission assembly.

  8. INSTALL DRIVE PLATE AND TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH SETTING BOLT 
    1. Install the 6 torque converter clutch mounting bolts.

      Torque: 48 N*m (489 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      First install the black colored bolt and then the remaining 5 bolts.

  9. INSTALL FLYWHEEL HOUSING SIDE COVER 
    1. Install the flywheel housing side cover.

  10. INSTALL WIRE HARNESS 
    1. Install the bolt and ground wire to the automatic transmission assembly.

      Torque: 5.4 N*m (55 kgf*cm, 48 in.*lbf)

  11. CONNECT OIL COOLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the oil cooler tube bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 14 N*m (140 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf)

    2. Install the oil cooler tube bracket with the bolt.

      Torque: 14 N*m (140 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Install the 2 oil cooler tubes with the 2 clamps.

  12. CONNECT FLOOR SHIFT GEAR SHIFTING ROD SUB-ASSEMBLY 
    1. Temporarily connect the shifting rod to the connecting rod swivel with the nut.

      HINT:

      The nut will be tightened to the specified torque during the shift lever position adjustment procedure.

  13. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  14. INSTALL NO. 3 EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR  (See INSTALLATION )

  15. INSTALL REAR PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  16. FULLY TIGHTEN NO. 1 CENTER SUPPORT BEARING ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  17. INSPECT AND ADJUST NO. 2 AND NO. 3 JOINT ANGLE  (See INSTALLATION )
  18. INSTALL AIR GUIDE PLATE OUTSIDE RH  (See INSTALLATION )
  19. INSTALL FRONT FLOOR NO. 1 HEAT INSULATOR  (See INSTALLATION )
  20. INSTALL AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR (for Bank 1 Sensor 1)  (See INSTALLATION )
  21. INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH  (See INSTALLATION )
  22. INSTALL NO. 2 EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR  (See INSTALLATION )
  23. CONNECT COMPRESSOR AND PULLEY  (See INSTALLATION )
  24. INSTALL AIR FUEL RATIO SENSOR (for Bank 2 Sensor 1)  (See INSTALLATION )
  25. INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH  (See INSTALLATION )
  26. INSTALL NO. 1 EXHAUST MANIFOLD HEAT INSULATOR  (See INSTALLATION )

    1. Install the front active stabilizer control actuator assembly (See INSTALLATION ).
  38. INSTALL FRONT STABILIZER BAR (w/o Active Stabilizer System) 
    1. Install the front stabilizer bar (See INSTALLATION ).
  39. INSTALL V-RIBBED BELT  (See INSTALLATION )
  40. INSTALL AIR CLEANER CASE SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  41. INSTALL AIR CLEANER CAP SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  42. INSTALL NO. 1 AIR CLEANER INLET  (See INSTALLATION )
  43. INSTALL REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER RH 
  44. INSTALL REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER LH 
  45. INSTALL NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  46. INSTALL ENGINE UNDER COVER 
  47. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER RH  (See INSTALLATION )
  48. INSTALL ENGINE ROOM SIDE COVER LH  (See INSTALLATION )
  49. INSTALL COOL AIR INTAKE DUCT SEAL  (See INSTALLATION )
  50. INSTALL V-BANK COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  51. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (See INITIALIZATION ).
  52. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION  (See ADJUSTMENT  )
  53. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION  (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION  )
  54. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Add the automatic transmission fluid (see AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID  ).
  55. INSPECT EXHAUST GAS LEAK 
  56. CHECK AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM PRECAUTION 
    1. After replacing the automatic transmission assembly, certain procedures are necessary (see REGISTRATION  ).
