System Outline

The cruise control system is a constant vehicle speed controller which controls the opening angle of the engine throttle valve via a SW, and allows the vehicle to be driven at a constant speed without depressing the accelerator pedal.

  1. Constant Speed Control

When the actual vehicle speed is faster than the set vehicle speed, a signal is sent to the electric throttle motor to rotate it in order to close the throttle valve. Alternatively, when the vehicle speed is slower than the set vehicle speed, a signal is sent to the electric throttle motor to rotate in order to open the throttle valve.

  2. Setting

When the - SET SW is pressed while the ON-OFF SW is ON (Within the settleable range of the vehicle speed: Above the low speed limit and below the high speed limit), the vehicle speed at which the SW is released is stored in the memory and the vehicle is controlled to drive constantly at that speed.

  3. Coast, Tap Down

    < Coast >

When the - SET SW is held down while driving with the cruise control active, the coast control changes the cruise control request opening to 'Zero' (Note: the throttle valve is not completely closed due to idle speed control, etc.) to gradually and constantly decelerate the vehicle, and stores the current vehicle speed in the memory when the SW is released and controls the vehicle to drive constantly at that speed.

    < Tap down >

When the - SET SW is pressed momentarily (Approx. 0.5 sec.), the set speed is reduced in approximately 1.6 km/h steps every time the SW is pressed. If the tap down operation attempts to put more than 5 km/h difference between the set vehicle speed and actual vehicle speed, the vehicle speed at which the SW is released is stored in the memory and the vehicle is controlled to drive constantly at that speed.

  4. Acceleration, Tap Up

    < Acceleration >

When the + RES SW is held down while driving with the cruise control active, the acceleration control rotates the electric throttle motor to open the throttle valve to gradually and constantly accelerate the vehicle, and stores the current vehicle speed in the memory when the SW is released and controls the vehicle to drive constantly at that speed.

    < Tap up >

When the + RES SW is pressed momentarily (Approx. 0.5 sec.), the set speed is increased in approximately 1.6 km/h steps every time the SW is pressed. If difference between the set vehicle speed and actual vehicle speed is more than 5 km/h, the tap up operation will not change the set vehicle speed.

  5. Low Speed Limit

The low speed limit is the lowest speed to which the cruise control can be set and is approximately 40 km/h. The cruise control cannot be set if the vehicle speed is below the low speed limit. If the vehicle speed drops below the low speed limit while driving with the cruise control active, the cruise control will be cancelled automatically.

  6. High Speed Limit

The high speed limit is the highest speed to which the cruise control can be set and is approximately 200 km/h. The cruise control cannot be set if the vehicle speed is above the high speed limit. The vehicle cannot be accelerated above the high speed limit using the + RES SW.

  7. Cancel

If the following signals are input while driving with the cruise control active, the cruise control will be cancelled.

    1. Stop lamp SW ON
    2. CANCEL SW ON in the control SW
    3. ON-OFF SW OFF
    4. D position circuit ON to OFF in the park/neutral position SW (Shift position is shifted from D, 6, 5, 4 to N, 3, 2, 1.) (A/T)
    5. Cruise control clutch SW OFF (Clutch pedal depressed) (M/T)
  8. Resume

If the vehicle speed stays above the low speed limit after the cruise control has been canceled because of one of the above signals being received, the cruise control can be resumed, and will return to the previously set speed, by pressing the + RES SW.

  9. Over Drive Control

The over-drive may be cut off when driving up a hill with the cruise control active. When the hill has finished (determined from the throttle opening information) after the over-drive was cancelled, the over-drive function will resume automatically after the over-drive resume time expires. However, if the vehicle speed drops below the over-drive resuming vehicle speed before the over-drive resume time expires, the timer will be reset and the overdrive will activate again when the vehicle speed reaches the over-drive resuming speed.

  10. Auto Cancel
    1. The set vehicle speed will be erased from the memory and the cruise control will be cancelled in the situations outlined below. Until the ON-OFF SW is turned ON again, the cruise operation indicator will blink and the cruise control cannot be activated.
      1. When the stop lamp SW is disconnected or has a short-circuit.
      2. When the vehicle speed signal is abnormal
    2. The set vehicle speed will be erased from the memory and the cruise control will be cancelled in the situations outlined below. Until the ON-OFF SW is turned ON again, the cruise operation indicator will blink and the cruise control cannot be activated unless the power SW is turned OFF.
      1. When the stop lamp SW input circuit is abnormal
      2. When the cancel circuit is abnormal
      3. When the electronic throttle parts are abnormal
    3. The set vehicle speed will be erased from the memory and the cruise control will be cancelled in the following situations.
      1. When the vehicle speed falls below the low speed limit (Approx. 40 km/h).
      2. When the vehicle speed falls to 16 km/h or more below the set vehicle speed.
