On-Vehicle Inspection

  1. BEFORE REFILL TRANSMISSION
    • This transmission requires Toyota Genuine ATF WS transmission fluid.
    • After servicing the transmission, you must refill the transmission with the correct amount of fluid.
    • Maintain the vehicle in a horizontal position while adjusting the fluid level
    • If the entire transmission, transmission pan, drain plug, valve body and/or torque converter is removed and installed, proceed to Fill Transmission Pan with Fluid.
    • If the transmission hose, output shaft oil seal and/or radiator is replaced, remove the refill plug, and then proceed to Fill Transmission
  2. FILL TRANSMISSION PAN WITH FLUID
    1. Remove the refill plug and overflow plug

    2. Fill the transmission through the refill hole until fluid begins to trickle out from the overflow tube
    3. Reinstall the overflow plug
  3. FILL TRANSMISSION
    1. Fill the transmission with the amount of fluid listed in the table below.
    2. Reinstall the refill plug to prevent the fluid from spilling out

      Standard Capacity

      FLUID CAPACITY SPECIFICATION

      Repair Specified Condition
Transmission pan and drain plug removal 3.7 liters (3 91 US qts, 3.26 lmp. qts)
Transmission valve body removal 4.7 liters (4.97 US qts, 4.14 lmp qts)
Torque converter removal 6.7 liters (7.1 US qts, 5.9 lmp. qts)

      HINT.

If the amount of fluid listed in the table cannot be added, perform the next step

    3. When the amount of fluid listed in the table cannot be added.
      1. Install the refill plug.
      2. Allow the engine to idle with the air conditioning off
      3. Move the shift lever through the entire gear range to circulate fluid
      4. Wait 30 seconds with the engine idling.
      5. Stop the engine
      6. Remove the refill plug and add fluid.
      7. Reinstall the refill plug
  4. PERFORM FLUID CIRCULATION
    1. Allow the engine to idle with the air conditioning off
    2. Move the shift lever through the entire gear range to circulate fluid.
  5. CHECK FLUID TEMPERATURE
    1. With the Techstream.
      1. Connect the Techstream to the DLC3
      2. Enter the following menus: Powertrain / Engine / Active Test / Connect the TC and TE1
      3. Slowly move the shift lever from P to M. Then return the shift lever to P
      4. Move the shift lever to D, them quickly move it back and forth between N and D (at least once every 1.5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds This will activate the fluid temperature detection mode.

        HINT.

While moving the shift lever between N and D a few times, the N indicator in the combination meter will not illuminate for 4 seconds even if the shift lever is moved to N This indicates that the transmission fluid temperature detection mode has been entered

      5. Check A/T Oil Temperature 1.
      6. Return the shift lever to P and press OFF on the Active Test display.
      7. Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F).

    2. Without the Techstream (Using the D shift indicator)
      1. Using SST, connect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG) of the DLC3

        SST 09843-18040

      2. Slowly move the shift lever from P to M Then return the shift lever to P

      3. Move the shift lever to D, then quickly move it back and forth between N and D (at least once every 1 5 seconds) for at least 6 seconds This will activate the fluid temperature detection mode.

        HINT

While moving the shift lever between N and D a few times, the N indicator in the combination meter will not illuminate for 4 seconds even if the shift lever is moved to N This indicates that the transmission fluid temperature detection mode has been entered

      4. Return the shift lever to P and disconnect terminals 13 (TC) and 4 (CG)
      5. The P indicator turns on again when the fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F) and blinks when it exceeds 42°C (108°F).
      6. Allow the engine to idle until the fluid temperature reaches 35°C (95°F)

        HINT

The fluid temperature should be less than 30°C (86°F) before starting the engine

  6. CHECK FLUID LEVEL
NOTE: The fluid temperature must be between 35°C (95°F) and 42°C (108°F) to check the fluid level.
    1. When the indicator light (P) turns on, lift the vehicle up immediately

Indicator Light will Indicate the ATF Temperature

      ATF TEMPERATURE SPECIFICATION

Lower than Proper Temp Proper Temp Higher than Proper Temp
      Off Turns on Blinking
NOTE: Perform fluid level inspection while the indicator light is on.
    2. Remove the overflow plug with the engine idling

    3. Check that the fluid comes out of the overflow tube. If fluid does not come out, proceed to the next step. If fluid comes out, wait until the overflow slows to a trickle and proceed to Complete.
  7. REFILL AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID
    1. Install the overflow plug.
    2. Stop the engine
    3. Remove the refill plug
    4. Add 0 4 liters (0.42 US qts, 0.35 lmp qts) of fluid.
    5. Allow the engine to idle and wait for 10 seconds.
    6. Repeat Check Fluid Level.
