On-Vehicle Inspection

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2007 Lexus SC 430. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. OPERATING CONDITION

The retractable hardtop system operates when the following conditions are met.

    1. Ignition switch is ON
    2. Vehicle speed is less than 5 km/h (3 mph)
    3. Luggage opener main switch is ON
    4. Tonneau cover switch is ON (Only when roof is open)
    5. Luggage courtesy switch is ON

(When the switch is malfunctioning, the retractable hardtop system operation is stopped. When there is a communication failure through the BEAN line, the condition of the switch is omitted from this operation condition list.)

  2. PACKAGE TRAY TRIM LINKED CONTROL OPERATION
    1. The package tray trim is operated when the roof reaches the specified position detected by the 3 limit switches (Roof position No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3).
  3. PACKAGE TRAY AWAIT CONTROL
    1. Open control:

If the roof is in the middle (position 2) and the package tray trim is not fully open, the roof returns to the middle (position 1) and waits for the operation of the package tray trim.

    2. Close control:

If the roof is in the middle (position 2) and the package tray trim is not fully open, the roof returns to the middle (position 1) and waits for the operation of the package tray trim (switching position).

  4. DOOR WINDOW LINKED CONTROL
    1. While opening and closing the retractable hardtop, if a door window is closed, it will go down before the retractable hardtop starts operating.
    2. When the door windows open 1/3 or more, the retractable hardtop system starts to operate.
    3. If the power window switch is 1/3 open and the window is further opened manually, the retractable hardtop operation is not affected.
  5. OTHER CONTROL MOTOR SPEED CONTROL
    1. Speed control

      * The roof motors (LH/RH) and the luggage motors (LH/RH) control speed with current controlled by the duty cycle (PWM-Pulse Width Modulator). These motors provide motor pulse count feedback to detect the motor rotation position and speed, resulting in crosswise synchronous control and a slow start/slow stop control (motor control).

    2. Slow start/Slow stop control
      • When starting the retractable hardtop operation, the operation of the roof is started at low speed and the speed is increased gradually.
      • When the roof is just before fully closed or fully opened, opening and closing operation speed is gradually decreased to low speed.
      • When the roof is opening and closing from the low speed range, the roof keeps the low speed retention operation.
      • The recognition of the low speed range is judged by the motor pulse count. When the motor pulse signal of the roof is abnormal, the roof always keeps the low speed retention operation (switching position).

    3. Synchronization control
      • Synchronization control operates when the roof drive motor LH/RH drives the roof and the luggage door drive motor LH/RH drives the luggage door.
      • By memorizing the motor position when starting the retractable hardtop operation as an initial position, synchronization control counts the number of motor pulses in order to make the right and left motors run with the same speed and detect the motor rotation position (roof position). Also synchronization control controls to make the speed per unit time equal.
    4. Door window manual operation control When the following operation is done, the door window is closed automatically after completion of retractable hardtop opening/closing operation: When the retractable hardtop control switch is pressed and held continuously, the retractable hardtop fully opens or fully closes. When the control switch is pressed again, the door windows close automatically.
    5. Indicator / Buzzer

The indicator light and warning buzzer operate as described in the table below.

      Warning control

      WARNING CONTROL CHART

      Condition Indicator Light Warning Buzzer
When starting roof operation OFF to ON Single beep
During roof half open condition ON -
When completing roof operation ON to OFF Single beep
When driving with roof half open* ON Continuous beep
Inconsistency of operation conditions Blinking -
      HINT:
*: The warning will occur when driving with a half open roof only when the vehicle speed is above 6 km/h (3.8 mph).
    6. Fail-safe
      • If abnormality of motor and limit switch occurs, the system will operate to prevent vehicle breakdown or driving with a half open roof as much as possible.
        ITEM OPERATION

        Item Operation
Limit Switch/Motor pulse abnormality In case of failure at portion where interference will not occur to link operation, it opens or closes roof temporarily and then stops
Motor circuit failure Quarter window motor If open circuit occurs, operation is stopped and roof can be only closed
Package tray trim motor If open circuit occurs, during roof operation:
        • If package tray trim panel and panel No. 2 are closed, roof can be closed
        • If package tray trim panel and panel No. 2 are opened, roof can be opened
        • If operation of package tray trim panel and panel No. 2 stops halfway, roof is stopped.
Other motor Short or open circuit: It stops output to motor with abnormality.
Motor locking: Operation is stopped once, then it starts when the retractable hardtop control switch is pressed again.
Motor locking condition is detected by current increasing to motor. ECU corrects current at motor locking depending on outside temperature.
Vehicle speed sensor single failure This system operates correctly if shift lever is on P.
Sliding roof control ECU uses shift lever P position range signal instead of vehicle speed signal.
  6. CHECK AIR CONDITIONING ASSEMBLY
    1. Remove the A/C control but do not disconnect the connectors (see REMOVAL ).
    2. Turn the ignition switch ON.
    3. Measure the voltage of the A/C control.

      Standard resistance

      TESTER CONNECTION SPECIFIED CONDITION CHART

Tester Connection Switch Condition Specified Condition
      A10-3 (OPEN) - A10-5 (SWE) OPEN switch ON 7 to 9 V
      A10-4 (CLS) - A10-5 (SWE) OPEN switch ON Below 3.0 V
      A10-3 (OPEN) - A10-5 (SWE) CLOSE switch ON Below 3.0 V
      A10-4 (CLS) A10-5 (SWE) CLOSE switch ON 7 to 9 V

If the result is not as specified, replace the A/C control with the connectors still connected.
