Automatic Transmission Assembly: Installation

  1. INSPECT TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Inspect the torque converter clutch (See TORQUE CONVERTER AND DRIVE PLATE ).
  2. INSTALL TORQUE CONVERTER CLUTCH ASSEMBLY 
    1. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension A between the transmission fitting surface of the engine *1 land the converter fitting surface of the drive plate *2. (#)

    2. Aligning the matchmarks on the transmission case and torque converter clutch, and then engage the splines of the input shaft and turbine runner.

    3. Engage the splines of the stator shaft and stator while turning the torque converter clutch.

      HINT:

      Turn the torque converter clutch approximately 180°.

    4. Turn the torque converter clutch and align the matchmarks on the torque converter clutch and transmission case to engage the key of the oil pump drive gear into the slot on the torque converter clutch.
      NOTE: Do not push on the torque converter when aligning the matchmarks.

    5. Using a vernier caliper and straightedge, measure dimension B shown in the illustration. Check that B is more than A measured in the step labeled (#).

      Standard: A + 1 mm (0.04 in.) or more

  3. INSTALL AUTOMATIC W/TRANSFER TRANSMISSION ASSEMBLY 
    1. Apply clutch spline grease to the surface of the torque converter clutch centerpiece that contacts the crankshaft.

      Clutch spline grease: 

      Toyota Genuine Clutch Spline Grease or equivalent 

      Maximum grease amount: 

      About 1 g (0.353 oz)

    2. Install the automatic transmission to the engine with the 10 bolts.

      Torque: Bolt A 

      71 N*m (724 kgf*cm, 52 ft.*lbf) for 17 mm head bolt 

      Bolt B 

      37 N*m (377 kgf*cm, 27 ft.*lbf) for 14 mm head bolt 

      NOTE: Confirm that 2 knock pins are on the transmission fitting surface of the engine block before installing the transmission.

    3. Turn the crankshaft to gain access to the installation locations of the 6 torque converter clutch setting bolts and install each bolt while holding the crankshaft pulley bolt with a wrench.

      Torque: 48 N*m (489 kgf*cm, 35 ft.*lbf) 

      HINT:

      First install the black colored bolt and then the remaining 5 bolts.

    4. Install the flywheel housing side cover.

  4. CONNECT WIRE HARNESS AND CONNECTOR

    1. Connect the park/neutral position switch connector and transmission wire connector.

      HINT:

      Push up the lever until the claw of the transmission wire connector makes a connection sound.

    2. Attach the 5 harness clamps and connector clamp to the automatic transmission.
  5. INSTALL FRONT PROPELLER SHAFT ASSEMBLY  (See INSTALLATION )
  6. INSTALL REAR NO. 1 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR AND REAR NO. 2 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the 2 insulators with the 4 bolts.

      Torque: 30 N*m (306 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf)

  7. INSTALL REAR NO. 4 ENGINE MOUNTING INSULATOR 
    1. Install the insulator with the 2 bolts.

      Torque: 30 N*m (306 kgf*cm, 22 ft.*lbf)

  8. INSTALL REAR ENGINE MOUNTING MEMBER 
    1. Install the member and rear No. 3 engine mounting insulator with the 5 nuts.

      Torque: 38 N*m (387 kgf*cm, 28 ft.*lbf)

  9. INSTALL NO. 1 OIL COOLER TUBE SUB-ASSEMBLY

    1. Temporarily install the oil cooler tube with the 2 bolts.
    2. Tighten the bolt for bracket A, make sure the stopper of bracket B is securely in place against the engine oil pan, and then tighten the bolt for bracket B.

      Torque: 14 N*m (143 kgf*cm, 10 ft.*lbf) 

    3. Connect the 2 oil cooler hoses with the 2 clips as shown in the illustration.
  10. INSTALL STARTER ASSEMBLY 
    1. Install the starter (See INSTALLATION ).
  11. INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY RH 
    1. Install the exhaust manifold RH (See INSTALLATION ).
  12. INSTALL EXHAUST MANIFOLD SUB-ASSEMBLY LH 
    1. Install the exhaust manifold LH (See INSTALLATION ).
  13. INSTALL TRANSMISSION CONTROL SHAFT LEVER RH 
    1. Install the transmission control shaft lever together with the floor shift gear shifting rod with the nut.

      Torque: 16 N*m (160 kgf*cm, 12 ft.*lbf)

  14. ADJUST SHIFT LEVER POSITION  (See ADJUSTMENT )
  15. CONNECT CABLE TO NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL 
    NOTE: When disconnecting the cable, some systems need to be initialized after the cable is reconnected (See INITIALIZATION ).
  16. ADD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID 
    1. Add automatic transmission fluid (See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID ).
  17. INSPECT SHIFT LEVER POSITION  (See ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION )
  18. CHECK AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM PRECAUTION 
    1. After replacing the automatic transmission assembly, certain procedures are necessary (See AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION SYSTEM ).
