On-Vehicle Inspection [10/2014 - ]: Procedure

  1. PERFORM SPARK TEST
    1. Check for DTCs.

      Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [10/2014 - 05/2019] , or refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [05/2019 - ]

      NOTE:

If any DTC is output, perform troubleshooting procedures for that DTC.

    2. Remove the 4 ignition coil assemblies and 4 spark plugs.

      Refer to REMOVAL [10/2014 - ]

    3. Disconnect the injector connector (for Port Injection).

      NOTE:

Perform this step in order to stop fuel injection to prevent damage to the catalyst due to unburned fuel.

    5. Install the spark plug to the ignition coil assembly and connect the connector.
    6. Ground the spark plug.
    7. Visually check that sparks occur while the engine is being cranked.
      NOTE:
      • When performing the inspection, be sure to ground the hexagonal portion or the threaded portion of the spark plug.
      • Do not crank the engine for more than 2 seconds.
        • For vehicles with a cranking hold function, turn the engine switch off during cranking to stop cranking.
      • If an ignition coil assembly is struck or dropped, replace it with a new one.
      • If a spark plug is struck or dropped, replace it with a new one.
    8. If sparks do not occur normally in 1 or more cylinders, perform the "Ignition Coil and Spark Test" below.
  2. INSPECT IGNITION COIL AND SPARK TEST

    HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing an ignition coil assembly or spark plug.

    Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2014 - 05/2019] , or refer to INITIALIZATION [05/2019 - ]

    1. Spark test flowchart.
      1. Check that the wire harness side connector of the ignition coil assembly with igniter is securely connected.

        Result Proceed to
        NG Connect securely
        OK Go to next step
      2. Perform a spark test on a malfunctioning ignition coil assembly with igniter.

        HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing an ignition coil assembly.

        Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2014 - 05/2019] , or refer to INITIALIZATION [05/2019 - ]

        1. Replace the ignition coil assembly with a normal one.
        2. Perform the spark test again.
        RESULT

        Result Proceed to
        OK Replace ignition coil assembly
        NG Go to next step
      3. Inspect the spark plugs.

        HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing a spark plug.

        Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2014 - 05/2019] , or refer to INITIALIZATION [05/2019 - ]

        1. If there is a cylinder in which ignition does not occur, interchange the spark plug of that cylinder and the spark plug of a cylinder in which ignition properly occurs.
        2. Check that sparks occur in the cylinder in which the properly functioning spark plug was installed.

          Result

          Result Proceed to
          OK Replace the spark plug
          NG Inspect the ignition system
Refer to DTC P0351-13: Ignition Coil "A" Circuit Open; DTC P035213: Ignition Coil "B" Circuit Open; DTC P035313: Ignition Coil "C" Circuit Open; DTC P035413: Ignition Coil "D" Circuit Open [10/2014 - ]
        NOTE:
        • If an ignition coil assembly is struck or dropped, replace it with a new one.
        • If a spark plug is struck or dropped, replace it with a new one.
      4. Connect the 2 injector connectors (for Direct Injection).
      5. Connect the injector connector (for Port Injection).
      6. Install the 4 ignition coil assemblies and 4 spark plugs.

        Refer to INSTALLATION [10/2014 - ]

    2. Clear DTCs.

      Refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [10/2014 - 05/2019] , or refer to DTC CHECK / CLEAR [05/2019 - ]

  3. CHECK SPARK PLUG
    NOTE:
    • Do not damage the iridium and platinum tips.
    • Check the iridium tip visually since the iridium tip may be damaged.
    • Do not adjust the gap since iridium plugs are used.
    • Replace with new spark plugs if damaged at all.
    • Replace with new spark plugs if extremely dirty due to sludge, etc.
    • Replace with a new spark plug if it is dropped or if it receives a strong impact.
    • When replacing with a new spark plug, do not remove the cap for protecting the spark plug tip until it is installed to the engine.

    HINT:

Perform "Inspection After Repair" after replacing a spark plug.

    Refer to INITIALIZATION [10/2014 - 05/2019] , or refer to INITIALIZATION [05/2019 - ]

    1. Visually check the spark plug.
      1. Start the engine.
      2. Increase the engine speed to 2500 rpm and then let the engine speed decrease. Perform this operation 5 times.*
        NOTE:

*: Do not perform this step if P030000 (misfire detection) or a related DTC is stored.

      3. Remove the spark plug.

        Refer to REMOVAL [10/2014 - ]

      4. Check the spark plug for any damage on its threads and insulator.
