Set Speed Fluctuates

WARNING: Disable air bag system before working around steering column or removing any air bag system component. See AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEM article.
  1. Check Speedometer  - While observing speedometer, test drive vehicle at a constant speed of 40-55 MPH. If speedometer does not display a constant speed, diagnose and repair speedometer as necessary. See INSTRUMENT PANEL article. If speedometer displays a constant speed, go to next step.
  2. Check Speed Control Actuator  - Test speed control actuator. See SPEED CONTROL ACTUATOR under COMPONENT TESTS. If speed control actuator is okay, go to next step. If speed control actuator is not okay, replace speed control actuator and retest system operation.
  3. Check Vehicle Speed Circuit Signal  - Turn ignition off. Disconnect instrument cluster connector C268 (C272 on electronic instrument clusters) and speed control amplifier connector C247. Using an ohmmeter, check resistance in Green/Yellow wire between instrument cluster connector and speed control amplifier connector C247. Check resistance between ground and instrument cluster connector Green/Yellow wire terminal. Resistances should be less than 5 ohms between instrument cluster and amplifier, and more than 10 k/ohms between instrument cluster and ground. If resistances are as specified, replace speed control amplifier and retest system operation. If resistances are not as specified, repair Green/Yellow wire. Retest system operation.
