CALIFORNIA Models

  1. Make sure that harness connector for ECC inspection is disconnected. See Fig 1 . Connect harness connector for exhaust gas sensor inspection. Turn ignition on and check ECC inspection lamps on instrument panel. See Fig 2 -Fig 4 .

  2. If bulb is not lit, replace bulb. If lit, start engine and warm to operating temperature. After warming up engine, let it run at 2000 RPM for about 5 minutes. Recheck inspection lamp. If off, go to step 5). If on, go to next step.
  3. Turn off engine and connect harness connector for ECC inspection and check inspection lamp for lighting interval. Leave exhaust gas sensor inspection connector connected.
  4. Run engine at idle to recieve lighting interval. If no light exists, check for an opening in the exhaust sensor circuit. If light comes on, check lighting interval. See Fig 5 .

  5. Check each solenoid. Turn ignition off. Verify that each harness connector is connected securely. If not, correct and return to step 2). Disconnect each harness connector. Measure the resistance of each solenoid.
  6. Air-fuel ratio solenoid should have a resistance of 30-50 ohms. If out of specification, replace carburetor. Anti-dieseling solenoid should have a resistance of 25-45 ohms. If out of specifications, replace the solenoid valve and return to step 2).
  7. Reconnect harness connectors. Disconnect the ECC 10-pin connector from control unit. Turn ignition on. Disconnect alternator "L" terminal. Measure the voltage between each terminal and ground. There should be 12-14 volts present. See Fig 6 .

  8. Check each sensor. Turn ignition off. Verify that each harness connector is connected securely. If not, correct and return to step 2). Disconnect 20-pin connector from control unit.
  9. Disconnect exhaust gas sensor harness connector and connect terminal for exhaust gas sensor harness connector to ground with a jumper wire. Check for continuity between terminal 2 of ECC 20-pin connector and ground metal on car body. See Fig 6 .
  10. If continuity exists, replace exhaust gas sensor. If not, repair or replace the ECC harness. If alarm lamp still indicates case 2, measure the water temperature sensor resistance between terminal 8 and 16 of ECC 20-pin connector. Resistance should be below 2900 ohms when above 68°F (20°C) and above 2100 ohms when below 68°F (20°C).
  11. Dip the water temperature sensor into water maintained at a temperature of 68°F (20°C) and measure resistance. Resistance should be 2100-2900 ohms. At 122°F (50°C), resistance should be 680-1000 ohms. If okay, repair or replace ECC harness. If not okay, replace water temperature sensor and return to step 1).
