TECHNICAL INFORMATION TIP
ENG CUTS-OUT AT OPERATING TEMP - DISTRIBUTOR OPTICAL SENSORS
YEAR(S): All
MANUFACTURER: Nissan
MODEL(S): Sentras, Stanzas, 300ZX
ISSUE & TIP
We have received several Tech Tip cards regarding the LED ignition system used on several different Nissan models. This distributor uses a set of LEDs and photodiodes to keep the ECU informed of engine timing and crank position.
These crank angle sensors may develop a sensitivity to heat over time. This may cause the engine to die when the engine reaches operating temperature. If the engine and crank angle sensor are allowed to cool down, the engine will usually start right up again. The only cure for the problem is to replace the distributor, as separate parts are not offered.
This problem is more common on Sentras due to their higher production numbers. You may also see the same problem on Stanzas and 300ZXs, or any other model that has been equipped with this distributor design. Checking the ECU may reveal a Code 11, indicating a crank angle sensor failure.
