HARD SHIFT: CHECK SHIFT LINKAGE BUSHINGS
TECHNICAL INFORMATION TIP
Reference Number(s): MIS0010AP, Date of Issue:
HARD SHIFTING
YEAR(S): 1983 & Up
MANUFACTURER: Nissan
MODEL(S): Pulsar & Sentra
ISSUE & TIP
If you encounter a hard shifting Nissan Pulsar or Sentra, check the bushings in the shift linkage shaft between the shift lever and the transaxle. If they are stiff or binding:
- Remove the shaft. A good quality battery terminal puller may be needed if the pin is frozen at the transaxle end of the shaft.
- Clean the bushings pins with fine emery cloth and lubricate with antiseize compound.
- New shift bushings are available, although all that is often necessary is to clean up the old bushings.
- If new bushings are being installed, they must be "sized" to match the bushing pins. Install the new bushings in the shifter shaft, then gradually enlarge them with a drill until they match the bushing pins. Don't get carried away. If you make the bushing opening too large, the shifting action will get sloppy.
