Test A: Abs Works Frequently

  1. Check proportioning valve. See DUAL PROPORTIONING VALVE . If a problem is found, repair as necessary. If proportioning valve is okay, check wheel speed sensor connectors for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair as necessary and retest. If connectors are okay, go to next step.
  2. Check tires for proper inflation, wear and size. If tires are okay, check front and rear wheel bearing axial end play. End play should be .002" (.05 mm). Adjust as necessary. See WHEEL BEARING . If bearing end play is okay, check clearance between sensor and rotor. Clearance should be .028-.059" (0.70-1.50 mm) for front wheels and .023-.047" (0.58-1.20 mm) for rear wheels.
  3. If clearance is incorrect, clean or replace sensor. If clearance is okay, check sensor rotor for damaged teeth. Replace rotor as necessary. If rotor is okay, check ABS control unit harness connector for damaged pins, corrosion and loose wires. Repair connector as necessary and retest. If connector is okay, replace ABS actuator/control unit. See ABS ACTUATOR/CONTROL UNIT  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
