Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Turn ignition off. Disconnect ECM harness connector. See Figure. Remove instrument cluster and disconnect combination meter harness connectors. Check continuity of Red/White wire between ECM harness connector terminal No. 81 (with NVIS) or No. 63 (without NVIS) and combination meter 24-pin harness connector terminal No. 14. See Figure and Fig 1 . Continuity should exist. Also, check circuit for short to ground and short to voltage. If problem exists, check intermediate connectors in circuit and repair or replace as necessary. If intermediate connectors are OK, repair open or short circuit as necessary and perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair. If circuit is okay, go to next step.
  2. Reconnect all harness connectors. Test drive vehicle and check speedometer operation. If speedometer operates properly, go to step  4. If speedometer does not operate properly, go to next step.
    • Intermediate harness connectors in the circuit for damaged, loose or corroded terminals.
    • Harness for open or short between VSS and combination meter.
Repair or replace as necessary. If harness and connectors are OK, repair or replace speedometer or circuit as necessary. See appropriate GAUGES & INSTRUMENT PANELS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT. Then, perform DTC CONFIRMATION TEST  to verify repair.
  3. No problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLESHOOTING - NO CODES article.
