NOTE: This amended version of NTB00-022a contains updated Service Information and Service Procedures. Please refer to this bulletin (NTB00-022b) for complete information and discard previously distributed copies of NTB00-022a.

SERVICE INFORMATION

There are three software cards used with the CONSULT-II tester: Diagnostics, NATS and ECU (Electronic Control Unit) Reprogramming. Updates for all three cards are available through ASIST.

If you have trouble with the operation of any card, you can restore the latest software with ASIST. Refer to the specific software card procedure provided in this bulletin for detail.

NOTE: Software updates will be announced via Technical Service Bulletins whenever new software is available.
  1. Diagnostic (red and white) Software Card (see Fig 1 ):

    The Diagnostic software card is used for diagnosis of:

    • Engine
    • Automatic Transmission
    • Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS)
    • Airbag
    • In-Vehicle Multiplexing System (IVMS)
    • Smart Entrance
    • Cruise Control (ASCD)
    • Traction Control System (TCS)
    • HICAS
    • All Mode 4 WD
  2. NATS (Purple) Software Card (see Fig 2 ):

    The NATS software card is used for diagnosis and initialization of:

    • Nissan Anti-Theft System (NATS)
  3. ECU (Orange) Reprogramming Software Card (see Fig 3 ):

    The ECU Reprogramming software card is used for:

    • Engine Control Module (ECM) Reprogramming
    • Transmission Control Module (TCM) Reprogramming

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Use the procedure below to perform software updates from the ASIST PC to CONSULT-II.

  1. Insert the card you would like to update into slot "A" of CONSULT-II (see Fig 4 ).

  2. Connect the AC power supply to CONSULT-II.
  3. Connect CONSULT-II to the ASIST PC with the special Ethernet cable (P/N 02002554, printed on the cable) contained in the CONSULT-II kit.
    NOTE: Connect the special ethernet cable to the ASIST PC by connecting it to the ethernet card connection port located on the back of the computer. Connect the special ethernet cable to CONSULT-II at the PC port located at the bottom end of the CONSULT-II unit.
  4. Set the Ethernet (IP) Address of the ASIST PC and CONSULT-II as follows:
    NOTE: If the Ethernet (IP) address between the ASIST PC and CONSULT-II has already been established, proceed to step 5.
    1. On the ASIST PC, click "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", and then select "Network".
    2. When the "Network Configuration" screen appears (see Fig 5 ) select "TCP/IP". Then select "Properties".

    3. Compare Figure 6 below with the "TCP/IP Properties" screen on the ASIST PC.
      • If the "IP Address" and "Subnet Mask" appear EXACTLY as shown in Fig 6 , click "Cancel" and close the "Control Panel" box. Now continue to step "D".
      • If the "IP Address" and "Subnet Mask" do not match EXACTLY as shown in Fig 6 , change the numbers so that they do. Click "OK", reboot the computer to save the new IP Address, and continue to step "D".

    4. Power on CONSULT-II, touch "Sub Mode", then touch "Configure Ethernet".
      NOTE: If you are updating the original NATS software (UEN99A), remove the NATS card and insert the Diagnostic Software Card into slot "A" of CONSULT-II to access "Sub Mode".
    5. Check that the Ethernet (IP) Address is 192.168.001.002 and the Mask is 255.255.255.000 (see Fig 7 ).

      • If the Ethernet (IP) Address already matches the address listed in step "E" above, press "Copy" to print the Address for future reference, turn off CONSULT-II and proceed with step 5 below.
      • If the Ethernet (IP) Address does not match the address listed in step "E" above, proceed with step "F" below to correctly set the CONSULT-II Ethernet (IP) address.
    6. To change, touch the Address number on the CONSULT-II screen (titled "Configure Ethernet"). A numeric keypad will appear (see Fig 8 ).

    7. Use the keypad to change the Address and Mask to the correct number.
    8. Touch "Save" and then press "Copy" to print the Address for future reference.
    9. Turn off CONSULT-II to allow the new address to be saved in memory, then proceed with step 5 below.
      NOTE: If you are updating the original NATS software (UEN99A), remove the Diagnostic Card and insert the NATS card into slot "A" of CONSULT-II unit.
  5. From the ASIST PC main menu screen, select "CONSULT Utilities" (see Fig 9 ).

  6. From the "CONSULT Utilities" screen, select "Update" (see Fig 10 ).

  7. Turn on CONSULT-II as follows (file transfer mode):
    1. While pressing on the CONSULT-II screen, quickly depress the ON/OFF switch (see Fig 11 ), then release your thumb from the screen after a double-beep sound is heard.
      NOTE: A double-beep will sound after the ON/OFF switch is quickly depressed.

    2. Select "Transfer files via Lan" (see Fig 12 ). Set the CONSULT-II unit down for now.
      NOTE: If you accidentally choose a menu option other than "Transfer Files via Lan", turn CONSULT-II off and restart it according to step 7A above.

  8. At the ASIST PC, select the "Okay" button on the "CONSULT-II Setup" screen.
  9. Select the software you would like to update: Diagnostics, NATS, or ECU Reprogramming (see Fig 13 ).
    NOTE: Your selection must match the card that is in slot "A" of CONSULT-II.

  10. Make sure the ethernet (IP) address (for CONSULT-II) is correct on the "Connection" screen, then select the "OK" button (see Fig 14 ).
    NOTE: There are no zeros in front of the numbers on this screen.

  11. Wait until the data transfer is complete. Data transfer will take about 2 to 3 minutes and the progress of the transfer is displayed on the ASIST PC screen titled "Dialog" (see Fig 15 ).
    NOTE: When the data transfer is complete, the CONSULT-II unit will automatically shut off.

    Update CONSULT-II Resident Software (as noted below). 

  12. Turn on CONSULT-II again by following step 7 above (file transfer mode).
  13. At the ASIST PC screen, select the "Resident" button (see Fig 16 ) and wait until the data transfer is complete. Allow several seconds for the CONSULT-II screen to dim. Once the CONSULT-II screen is dim, the software update is complete.

  14. Turn on CONSULT-II normally. The Start screen should display the new software version I.D. number.
  15. Disconnect the AC power cord and the ethernet cable from CONSULT-II.
