DTC Confirmation Test (Using Generic Scan Tool)
NOTE:
Use the following test to check overall EGR function. During this test, 1st trip DTC P0400 may not be confirmed.
NOTE:
On 2.4L models, disconnecting EGRC solenoid valve will cause DTC P1400 to set. Disregard 1st trip DTC.
- Start engine and warm to normal operating temperature. On 2.4L models, disconnect EGRC solenoid valve harness connector. Check for EGR valve opening while quickly revving engine from 2000 to 4000 RPM under no load. On 3.3L models, check for EGR valve opening while quickly revving engine from idle to 3000 RPM under no load. On all models, EGR valve should open and close without sticking.
- If operation is not as specified, go to appropriate DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE. If operation is as specified, go to next step.
- Measure voltage between ground and ECM terminal No. 63 (EGR temperature sensor signal) by backprobing at idle speed. See Figure . See Figure or Figure . Voltage should be less than 4.5 volts. If voltage is as specified, system is okay at this time. If voltage is not as specified, turn ignition off and go to next step (2.4L models) or step 5 (3.3L models).
- With all harness connectors connected, check continuity of Black/White wire between EGR temperature sensor harness connector terminal No. 2 and ECM harness connector terminal No. 43. Continuity should exist. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to step 6 .
- Disconnect EGR temperature sensor harness connector. Check continuity between ground and EGR temperature sensor harness connector terminal No. 2. Continuity should exist. If problem is found, repair as necessary. If problem is not found, go to next step.
- Remove EGR temperature sensor, located near EGR valve. Place sensor in heated water. Measure resistance between EGR temperature sensor terminals, with water at specified temperatures. See EGR TEMPERATURE SENSOR RESISTANCE table. If resistance is as specified, no problem is indicated at this time. Problem may be intermittent. See INTERMITTENTS in TROUBLE SHOOTING - NO CODES article. If resistance is not as specified, replace EGR temperature sensor.
