Engine Controls - Removal & Installation: Introduction

CAUTION: When battery or ECM is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until adaptation systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES - NISSAN article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
NOTE: Before replacing any component(s) that scan tool suggests are faulty. Ensure that all wiring connections and harness connectors are okay. Ensure that power and ground circuits are functioning properly. For circuit identification, see ENGINE PERFORMANCE in appropriate SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL article.
NOTE: Not all procedures apply to all models. Most components are a simple unbolt and bolt-on procedure. For component locations, see COMPONENT LOCATIONS in SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
NOTE: Each time the ECM is disconnected or replaced perform all of the following and or:
  • Each time the accelerator pedal position sensor or accelerator pedal position sensor harness connector is disconnected or replaced perform Accelerator Pedal Released Position Learning. See ACCELERATOR PEDAL RELEASED POSITION LEARNING  under PROGRAMMING.
  • Each time the electronic throttle control actuator or electronic throttle control actuator harness connector is disconnected or replaced perform Throttle Valve Closed Position Learning. See THROTTLE VALVE CLOSED POSITION LEARNING  under PROGRAMMING.
  • Each time the electronic throttle control actuator or electronic throttle control actuator harness connector is disconnected or replaced perform Idle Air Volume Learning. See IDLE AIR VOLUME LEARNING  under PROGRAMMING.
  • If idle speed or ignition timing is out of specification. perform Idle Air Volume Learning. See IDLE AIR VOLUME LEARNING  under PROGRAMMING.

Removal and installation procedures are covered in this article. If component removal and installation is primarily an unbolt and bolt-on procedure, only a torque specification may be furnished.
