TECHNICAL SERVICE BULLETIN
| INFINITI: | All Infiniti |
| APPLIED VEHICLES: | All Infiniti |
GENERAL PROCEDURE
Updated February 16, 2011
A symptom based TSB is required before using this procedure.
- ASIST on the CONSULT III (C-III) computer has been freshly synchronized (updated).
- All C-III software updates (if any) have been installed.
- Connect a battery charger to the vehicle battery.
If the 12V battery voltage drops during reprogramming the TCM may be damaged .
- Be sure to turn OFF all
vehicle electrical loads.
If a vehicle electrical load remains ON, the TCM may be damaged.
- For TCM reprogramming, the C-III MUST be connected to the VI using the USB cable.
- Be sure to connect the AC Adapter. If C-III battery voltage drops during reprogramming the process will be interrupted and the TCM will be damaged .
SERVICE PROCEDURE
TCM Reprogramming
- Install the CONSULT III (C-III) PCMCIA Card Adapter and Security Card (see Figure A
).
Figure A
- Make sure a screen print for Warranty documentation can be done from C-III during this process while still cable-connected to the vehicle.
- Use the USB cable
to connect the Vehicle Interface (VI) to the C-III computer, and then connect the VI to the vehicle.CAUTION: For TCM reprogramming, the C-III computer MUST be connected to the VI using the USB cable.
- Connect the AC Adapter to the C-III computer. CAUTION: Be sure to connect the AC Adapter. If the C-III computer battery voltage drops during reprogramming. the process will be interrupted.
- Connect a battery charger to the vehicle 12V battery
.
- Set the battery charger at a low charge rate (trickle charge).
NOTE: The Midtronics GR-8 Battery and Diagnostic Station, set to "Power Supply" mode, is recommended.CAUTION: Be sure the battery charger is connected securely to the battery. Make sure the battery voltage stays above 12V during reprogramming. If the battery voltage drops during reprogramming the TCM will be damaged . - Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF.
- The engine must be OFF (not running) during the reprogramming procedure.
- Turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads such as exterior lights, interior lights, HVAC, blower, rear defogger, audio, NAVI, seat heater, steering wheel heater, etc.
CAUTION: Make sure to turn OFF all vehicle electrical loads. If the vehicle battery voltage drops below 12V, the reprogramming will not complete. After the "Transfer To VI" is complete, the reprogramming will stop. "Transfer To ECU" will not start. - Make sure the engine cooling fan(s) is not
running.
If the cooling fan(s) is running:
- Turn the ignition OFF.
- Wait for the engine to cool.
- Turn the ignition ON (with engine OFF).
- Make sure the engine cooling fan(s) is not running.
- Open / start ASIST on the C-III computer.
- Click on CONSULT Utilities, CONSULT-III, and then wait for the "Detecting VI/MI in progress" message to clear (picture not shown).
- Click on the "Detected VI" from the list. Your selection will highlight (see Figure 1 ).
- Click on Connect
(see Figure 1
).

- Wait for the "Checking the firmware version" message to clear (picture not shown).
- Select from the Vehicle Name
and Model Year
lists (see Figure 2
).
- Click on and drag the Scroll Bars up or down to find your vehicle and model year (see Figure 2 ).
- Click on your selections. Your selections will then highlight (highlights not shown).
- Click on Select
(see Figure 2

- The next screen will look similar to Figure 3
.
- Make sure the correct Vehicle Name and Model Year are displayed (see Figure 3 .).
- Click on Confirm
(see Figure 3
.).

- Click on the "Diagnosis" icon (see Figure 4
.).
Figure 4
- Wait for CAN Diagnosis to reach 51% (see Figure 5
.).
- When the CAN diagnosis reaches 51%, the process icons in the Process Guide Area at the top of the screen will light (become enabled).
- When the icons light, click on the "DTC" icon (see Figure 5 .).
- Wait for "ECM Diagnosis" to complete.NOTE: C-III will state "ECM" throughout the TCM reprogram process. This is normal.
- If there are no ENGINE or TRANSMISSION DTCs , click on the "Repair" icon (see Figure 7 ).
- Click on the "ECM Reprogram"
icon (see Figure 8
).

- At this point, refer to the symptom based TSB that directed you to reprogram the TCM.
- The symptom based TSB is required in order to determine which reprogramming part number to use.
- Print and record the current TCM P/N and keep it with the vehicle repair order / records.
- Click on Next
(see Figure 9
).

NOTE: If the screen in Figure 10 appears, there is data stored in the VI. Select Yes to proceed with Reprogramming (see green arrow in Figure 10 ).Figure 10
- The screen in Figure 11
is displayed during data transfer.CAUTION: During data transfer:
- DO NOT disturb the VI, DDL, or USB connections.
- DO NOT try to start the engine or turn the ignition OFF.
- The engine fans may turn on. This is normal.
