DTC 2-1: Steering Angle Sensor

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 1998 Acura 3.5RL and 1997 Acura 3.5RL. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Ensure tire pressures are correct and all tires are of matching size before continuing with diagnosis.
  1. Disconnect steering angle sensor 5-pin connector. See Figure . Disconnect TCS control unit connectors. Check for continuity between ground and TCS control unit 14-pin connector terminals No. 9 (Gray wire) and then No. 13 (Brown/Yellow wire). See Figure . If continuity to ground does not exist on either terminal, go to next step. If continuity to ground exists at either terminal, repair short to ground in that circuit between TCS control unit and steering angle sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  2. Check for continuity between ground and TCS control unit 20-pin connector terminals No. 4 (Blue wire) and then No. 16 (White/Blue wire). See Figure . If continuity to ground does not exist on either terminal, go to next step. If continuity to ground exists at either terminal, repair short to ground in that circuit between TCS control unit and steering angle sensor. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  3. Reconnect TCS control unit connectors. Turn ignition on. Measure voltage between ground and TCS control unit 20-pin connector terminal No. 16 (White/Blue wire). See Figure . Reading should be approximately 5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, replace TCS control unit.
  4. Measure voltage between TCS control unit 20-pin connector terminals No. 16 (White/Blue wire) and No. 4 (Blue wire). See Figure . Reading should be approximately 5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, replace TCS control unit.
  5. Measure voltage between ground and steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 5 (White/Blue wire). See Fig 1 . Reading should be approximately 5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair open in White/Blue wire between TCS control unit 20-pin connector terminal No. 16 and steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 5. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  6. Measure voltage between steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminals No. 5 (White/Blue wire) and No. 1 (Blue wire). See Fig 1 . Reading should be approximately 5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair open in Blue wire between TCS control unit 20-pin connector terminal No. 4 and steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 1. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  7. Turn ignition off. Reconnect steering angle sensor connector. Turn ignition on. While turning steering wheel slowly, measure voltage between ground and steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 2 (White wire). See Fig 1 . Reading should vary from 0-5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, replace steering angle sensor. See STEERING ANGLE SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  8. While turning steering wheel slowly, measure voltage between ground and steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 4 (Gray wire). See Fig 1 . Reading should vary from 0-5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, replace steering angle sensor. See STEERING ANGLE SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
  9. While turning steering wheel slowly, measure voltage between ground and TCS control unit 14-pin connector terminal No. 13 (Brown/Yellow wire). See Figure . Reading should vary from 0-5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair open in wire between TCS control unit 14-pin connector terminal No. 13 and steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 2. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  10. While turning steering wheel slowly, measure voltage between ground and TCS control unit 14-pin connector terminal No. 9 (Gray wire). See Figure . Reading should vary from 0-5 volts. If reading is as specified, go to next step. If reading is not as specified, repair open in Gray wire between TCS control unit 14-pin connector terminal No. 9 and steering angle sensor 5-pin connector terminal No. 4. See WIRING DIAGRAMS  .
  11. Clear DTC. See CLEARING TROUBLE CODES  under DIAGNOSIS & TESTING. Start engine and slowly turn steering wheel. If DTC 2-1 resets, replace TCS control unit.
