DTC P0116: Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor Range/Performance Problem

NOTE: If DTCs P0117 and/or P0118 are also set, trouble shoot those DTCs before DTC P0116.

Start engine and run it at 3000 RPM, with no load and transmission in Park or Neutral, until radiator cooling fan comes on. Let engine idle. Using scan tool, check ECT sensor data. If temperature is 176-200°F (80-93°C) or voltage is .4-.7 volt, problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. Check thermostat and cooling system. If temperature is not 176-194°F (80-90°C) or voltage is not .4-.7 volt, check thermostat and cooling system. If thermostat and cooling system are okay, replace ECT sensor.
