Cruise Control Systems: Description

WARNING: Deactivate air bag system before performing any service operation. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article. DO NOT apply electrical power to any component on steering column without first deactivating air bag system. Air bag may deploy.
CAUTION: Before disconnecting battery, obtain anti-theft code for radio. After battery is reconnected, the word CODE will appear on radio display. Enter 5-digit anti-theft code using select buttons and radio will begin working. If code is entered wrong 10 times, leave radio on at least one hour and enter code correctly. Any time radio power is lost, pre-selected radio stations will have to be set.

The cruise control unit receives command signals from cruise control main switch and cruise control SET/RESUME switch. Cruise control unit receives vehicle operating information from brake switch, Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS), clutch switch (manual transmission), or A/T gearshift position switch (automatic transmission). See Figure . Ignition Control Module (ICM) also provides operating information to cruise control unit.

The cruise control unit compares actual vehicle speed to selected speed. Throttle is either opened or closed based upon this comparison. A signal from the brake switch will disengage system when brakes are applied. The clutch switch, A/T gear position switch, and cancel switch will also send disengage signals to cruise control unit.
