Diagnostic Procedure

  1. Start engine. Hold engine speed at 3000 RPM with no load and transmission in Park or Neutral until radiator fan comes on, then allow engine to idle. Using scan tool, check ECT sensor. If ECT sensor does not indicate 176-200°F (80-93°C), go to next step. If ECT sensor indicates 176-200°F (80-93°C), problem is intermittent. System is okay at this time. Check thermostat and cooling system. Repair as necessary.
  2. Check thermostat and cooling system. Repair as necessary. If thermostat and cooling system are okay, replace ECT sensor.
