DTC P0506: Idle Control System Rpm Lower Than Expected
CAUTION:
When substituting or replacement of PCM is recommended, see PCM REMOVAL & REPLACEMENT
for important precautions.
- Turn ignition on. Using Honda PGM Tester or the HDS, do the DTC CLEAR in the CLEAR menu.
- Start engine. Hold engine speed at 3000 RPM with no loads (A/T in Park or Neutral) until radiator fan comes on, then let engine idle for 2 minutes.
- Test under the following conditions:
- Engine coolant temperature more than 156°F (70°C).
- Intake air temperature more than 32°F (0°C).
- More than 15 seconds elapsed after stating engine.
- Vehicle not moving.
- Fuel trim between 0.73 and 1.47.
- Fuel feedback in closed loop.
- Using the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS, monitor OBD STATUS for DTC P0506 in the DTCs menu. If it is FAILED, go to next step. If it PASSED, go to step 12 . If it is EXECUTING, keep the condition continual until a result comes in. If it is OUT OF CONDITION, go to step 3 and recheck.
- Remove intake air duct from throttle body. Check for dirt, carbon and damage at throttle bore. If there is dirt or carbon at throttle bore remove throttle body for cleaning. Be careful not to pinch fingers. See Figure . Wipe off carbon deposits on throttle valve and inside throttle bore with a paper towel soaked in carburetor cleaner. Install throttle body. Go to step 7 . If there is damage in throttle bore, go to next step. If there is no dirt, carbon and damage at throttle bore, check A/C system, power steering system. Go to step 1 and recheck.
- Replace throttle body, go to next step.
- Turn ignition on. With the Honda PGM tester or the HDS, do PCM RESET in the CLEAR menu. Do the PCM idle learn procedure. See PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE . Go to next step.
- Start engine. Hold engine speed at 3000 RPM with no loads (A/T in Park or Neutral) until radiator fan comes on, then let engine idle for 2 minutes.
- Test under the following conditions:
- Engine coolant temperature more than 156°F (70°C).
- Intake air temperature more than 32°F (0°C).
- More than 15 seconds elapsed after stating engine.
- Vehicle not moving.
- Fuel trim between 0.73 and 1.47.
- Fuel feedback in closed loop.
- Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs in the DTC menu. If DTC P0506 is set, go to 1 and recheck. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are set, troubleshoot those indicated. If Temporary DTCs or DTCs are not set, go to next step.
- Using the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS, monitor OBD STATUS for DTC P0506 in the DTCs menu. If it is PASSED, troubleshooting is done. If it FAILED, go to step 1 . f it is EXECUTING, keep the condition continual until a result comes in. If it is OUT OF CONDITION, go to step 9 and recheck.
- Remove intake air duct from throttle body. Check for dirt, carbon and damage at throttle bore. If there is dirt or carbon at throttle bore remove throttle body for cleaning. Go to step 7 . If there is damage in throttle bore, go to step 6 . If there is no dirt, carbon and damage at throttle bore, go to next step.
- Recheck with different load conditions. Turn on headlights, blower motor, rear window defogger and/or A/C, changing gear positions, etc.
- Using the Honda PGM Tester or the HDS, monitor OBD STATUS for DTC P0506 in the DTCs menu. If it is PASSED, troubleshooting is done. If it FAILED, check A/C system, power steering system. Go to 1 and recheck. If it is EXECUTING, keep the condition continual until a result comes in. If it is OUT OF CONDITION, go to step 13 and recheck.
