Rack Guide Adjustment

Special Tools Required 

Lock nut wrench, 40 mm 07916-SA50001

  1. Set the wheels in the straight ahead position.
  2. Remove the air cleaner (see AIR CLEANER REMOVAL/INSTALLATION ).
  3. Remove the heat shield (A).

  4. Remove the transmission mount bracket (see step 42 on ENGINE REMOVAL ).
  5. Under the steering gearbox, remove the return hose clamps (A).

    Right side:

    Left side:

  6. Loosen the rack guide screw lock nut (A) with the special tool, then remove the rack guide screw (B).

  7. Remove the old sealant from the rack guide screw, and apply new sealant to the middle of the threads (A). Loosely install the rack guide screw on the steering gearbox.

  8. Tighten the rack guide screw (A) to 25 N.m (2.5 kgf.m, 18 lbf.ft), then loosen it.

  9. Retighten the rack guide screw to 4 N.m (0.4 kgf.m, 3 lbf.ft), then back it off to the specified angle.

    Specified return angle: 10°+/-5° 

  10. Hold the rack guide screw stationary with a wrench, and tighten the lock nut by hand until it is fully seated.
  11. Install the special tool on the lock nut (B), and hold the rack guide screw stationary with a wrench. Tighten the lock nut an additional 30° with the special tool.
  12. Install the transmission mount bracket (see step 9 on ENGINE INSTALLATION ).
  13. Reinstall the return hose clamps, heat shield, and air cleaner.
  14. Check for unusual steering effort through the complete turning travel.
  15. Check the steering wheel rotation play and the power assist (see STEERING WHEEL ROTATIONAL PLAY CHECK  ).
