DTC P0339, P0389: CKP Sensor A Circuit Intermittent Interruption; CKP Sensor B Circuit Intermittent Interruption

NOTE:
  • Information marked with an asterisk (*) applies to CKP sensor B.
  • Before you troubleshoot, record all freeze data and any on-board snapshot, and review the GENERAL TROUBLESHOOTING INFORMATION .
  1. Clear the DTC with the HDS.
  2. Test-drive the vehicle for several minutes in the range of these recorded freeze data parameters:
    • Engine speed
    • Vehicle speed
  3. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.

    Is DTC P0339 and/or P0389* indicated? 

    1. YES  - Go to step  4.
    2. NO  - Intermittent failure, system is OK at this time. Check for poor connections or loose terminals at CKP sensor A/B and the ECM/PCM.
  4. Check for poor or loose connections at these connectors and terminals:
    • CKP sensor A/B
    • ECM/PCM
    • Engine ground
    • Body ground

    Are the connections OK? 

    1. YES  - Go to step  5.
    2. NO  - Reconnect or repair the connectors or terminals, then go to step  8.
  5. Check for damage to the CKP sensor A/B pulse plate on the timing belt drive pulley (see TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT ).

    Is there damage? 

    1. YES  - Replace CKP sensor A/B pulse plate/timing belt drive pulley (see TIMING BELT ADJUSTER REPLACEMENT ), then go to step  8.
    2. NO  - Go to step  6.
  6. Turn the ignition switch OFF.
  7. Replace the CKP sensor (see CKP SENSOR REPLACEMENT  ).
  8. Turn the ignition switch ON (II).
  9. Reset the ECM/PCM with the HDS.
  10. Clear the CKP pattern with the HDS.
  11. Do the ECM/PCM IDLE LEARN PROCEDURE .
  12. Do the CKP pattern learn procedure (see CRANK (CKP) PATTERN CLEAR/CRANK (CKP) PATTERN LEARN ).
  13. Start the engine, and let it idle 10 seconds.
  14. Check for Temporary DTCs or DTCs with the HDS.

    Are any Temporary DTCs or DTCs indicated? 

    1. YES  - If DTC P0339 and/or P0389* is indicated, check for poor connections or loose terminals at CKP sensor A/B and the ECM/PCM, then go to step  1. If any other Temporary DTCs or DTCs are indicated, go to the indicated DTCs troubleshooting.
    2. NO  - Troubleshooting is complete.
