Repair Procedure: Procedure
- A.WARNING:
- Review the precautions and procedures before doing repairs or service .
- Wait at least 3 minutes, after disconnecting the 12 volt battery terminal.
- If you are replacing the driver's airbag after a deployment, refer to Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment - Refer to: SRS Component Replacement/Inspection After Deployment for a complete list of other parts that must also be replaced.
- If the driver's airbag deployed, the cable reel cannot be reused because of thermal damage.
■ Preconditions
■ Sub-Procedure
• Removal
- Insert a punch (a) through the hole of the steering wheel cover and push the spring (b) to release the front airbag pin (c) while pulling out the airbag. Repeat for the other side. (Figure 1)
Punch Specifications (Figure 1)
Standard Value d 5.5 mm (0.217 in) Figure 1
• Installation
- Install the driver's airbag (e) by pushing it in until you hear a click. (Figure 2)NOTE: Confirm that the front airbag pins are securely mounted to the springs. (Figure 2)

■ Sub-Procedure
Figure 1
• Removal
1. Loosen the bolt (a) three turns. (Figure 1)
Figure 2
2. Refer to the figure 2.
Tool Details (Figure 2)
Name b Steering Wheel Puller (Commercially Available) If you thread the puller bolts (c) into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt. (Figure 2)
3. Remove the steering wheel (d). (Figure 2)
NOTE:- Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.
- Remove the old sealant from the threads in the column shaft.
Figure 3
• Installation
NOTE: A new cable reel is locked by a yellow tab for center adjustment. When installing the new cable reel there is no need to rotate the cable. After the tab is removed, discard it after installing the cable reel.1. Make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
2. Rotate the cable reel (e) clockwise until it stops. (Figure 3)
3. Rotate the cable reel counterclockwise until the arrow mark (f) on the cable reel points straight up. (Figure 3)
4. Rotate the cable reel counterclockwise two full turns. The arrow mark on the cable reel should point straight up.
Figure 4
5. Position the steering wheel hub (g) so that it engages the pin (h) of the cable reel. (Figure 4)
Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when installing the steering wheel.
Figure 5
6. Install a new bolt (i), and tighten it to the specified torque. (Figure 5)
Make sure that the cable reel subharness (k) and the horn harness (m) are routed above the SRS harness (n). (Figure 5)
NOTE: Install the bolt and tighten it within 5 minutes to the specified tightening torque.■ After Installation
1. Steering Wheel Spoke Angle Check
- Check the steering wheel spoke angle.
- With the front wheels straight ahead, make sure the steering wheel is centered and the turning revolutions from center to full lock (left and right) are equal. If not, check the installation of the steering wheel and the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.
2. VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization - Refer to: VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization
- C.
■ Preconditions
- Adjust the steering column to the full tilt down position, and to the full telescopic out position.
■ Sub-Procedure
• Removal
- Release the clips, then lift up the dashboard meter visor blind cover (a).
- D.
