DTC P0119  : Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor 1 Circuit Out of Range

The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1 for electrical malfunctions. ECT sensor 1 is a thermistor that detects engine coolant temperature at engine outlet, which used in thermal management as engine coolant temperature. The ECT sensor 1 resistance varies depending on temperature. The sensor resistance and the output voltage increase as the engine coolant temperature decreases. The output voltage is continuously monitored against minimum and maximum thresholds. If the voltage difference between ECT sensor 1 value and filtered ECT sensor 1 value is a specified value for a specified time, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold 

The absolute difference between ECT sensor 1 value and filtered ECT sensor 1 value is 0.4 V or more for at least 1 second.

Possible Cause 

NOTE:

The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.

  • ECT sensor 1 failure
  • PCM internal circuit failure

Diagnosis Details 

Conditions for setting the DTC 

When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, the MIL comes on and a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored.

Conditions for clearing the DTC 

The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
