DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P0013 (2.0L Engine) (2024 2025)
DTC P0013 : Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) Oil Control Solenoid Valve B Malfunction
General Description
The variable valve timing control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve B circuit is monitored for electrical faults. The diagnosis is performed by a dedicated integrated circuit which is capable of detecting a short circuit to the battery, a short circuit to ground as well as circuit continuity faults. If the VTC oil control solenoid valve B voltage is out of normal range, the powertrain control module (PCM) detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold
- Open circuit
VTC oil control solenoid valve B output voltage is between 2.2 - 2.8 V for at least 0.1 seconds during VTC oil control solenoid valve B power stage is off.
- Short circuit to power
VTC oil control solenoid valve B output voltage is between 2.8 - 5.0 V for at least 0.3 seconds during VTC oil control solenoid valve B power stage is off.
- Short circuit to ground
VTC oil control solenoid valve B output voltage is between 0 - 2.2 V for at least 0.1 seconds during VTC oil control solenoid valve B power stage is off.
Possible Cause
The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
- VTC oil control solenoid valve B VTCEX line short to power
- VTC oil control solenoid valve B VTCEX line short to ground
- VTC oil control solenoid valve B VTCEX line open
- PCM internal circuit failure
Confirmation Procedure
Operating Condition
- Start the engine. Hold the engine speed [Engine Speed] at 3, 000 rpm without load (in neutral) until the radiator fan comes on.
- Let it idle for at least 1 second.
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected, the MIL comes on and a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored in the PCM memory.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
