DTC P0089  : Fuel Pressure Regulator Performance

General Description

GHH652663Courtesy of HONDA, U.S.A., INC.

The high pressure fuel system consists of a fuel rail, a fuel rail pressure sensor, a high pressure fuel pump with a built-in fuel control solenoid. In dependence of torque demand and engine speed, high pressure has to be adjusted. Therefore the fuel pressure in the rail is measured and controlled with help of the fuel control solenoid. If the difference between the desired and measured fuel rail pressure is too large, combustion and emissions can be influenced. The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors the high pressure fuel control system. The diagnosis checks the plausibility of the high pressure controller output if the activation of the fuel control solenoid extremely deviates from the pre-control. If the pressure deviation at controller output is a specified value, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type

Execution Continuous
Sequence None
Duration 7.5 seconds or more
DTC Type Two drive cycles, MIL on

Enable Conditions

Condition Minimum Maximum
Elapsed time after starting the engine 5 seconds -
Relative fuel mass quantity* 1 5.02 % 320.02 %
Relative fuel mass quantity* 2 5.02 % 190.031 - 250.031%*
Other High pressure regulation not reset

*: Depending on engine speed.

*1: USA/Canada models

*2: Mexico models

Malfunction Threshold

Either of the conditions occurs for at least 7.5 seconds:

Possible Cause

NOTE:

The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes

  • High pressure fuel pump failure (pressure relief valve defection)
  • Fuel pump low flow
  • High pressure fuel pipe leakage
  • Fuel injector contamination
  • Fuel rail pressure sensor drifting

Diagnosis Details

Conditions for setting the DTC

When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, the MIL comes on and a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored.

Conditions for clearing the DTC

The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
