DTC P2182  : Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor 2 Out of Range

General Description

The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 2 for electrical malfunctions. ECT sensor 2 is a thermistor that detects engine coolant temperature at radiator outlet, which used in thermal management as engine coolant temperature upstream the engine. The ECT sensor 2 resistance varies depending on temperature. The sensor resistance and the output voltage increase as the engine coolant temperature decreases. The output voltage is continuously monitored against minimum and maximum thresholds. If the ECT sensor 2 output temperature is a specified value for a specified time, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type

Execution Continuous
Sequence None
Duration 5 seconds or more
DTC Type Two drive cycles, MIL on

Enable Conditions

Condition
Vehicle ON mode

Malfunction Threshold

The ECT sensor 2 output temperature [ECT Sensor 2] is greater than 268.4 deg.F (131.3 deg.C) for at least 5 seconds.

Possible Cause

NOTE:

The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.

  • ECT sensor 2 TW2 line short to ground
  • ECT sensor 2 failure

Diagnosis Details

Conditions for setting the DTC

When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, the MIL comes on and a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored.

Conditions for clearing the DTC

The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
