DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P0711

DTC P0711  : Transmission Fluid Temperature Sensor (Range/Performance)

General Description

The transmission fluid temperature sensor is a thermistor type sensor that changes resistance according to the change in transmission fluid temperature. The transmission control module (TCM) sends a 5 V reference signal to the sensor through a pull-up resistor. When the transmission fluid temperature is low, the sensor resistance increases and the TCM detects a high signal voltage. As the transmission fluid temperature rises, the sensor resistance decreases and the TCM detects a low signal voltage. If the transmission fluid temperature sensor signal does not change, the TCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Monitor Execution, Sequence, Duration, DTC Type

Execution Once per driving cycle
Sequence None
Duration 5 minutes or more
DTC Type Two drive cycles, MIL on, Shift position indicator blinks

Enable Conditions

Condition Minimum Maximum
Engine coolant temperature [Engine Coolant Temperature] 158 deg.F (70 deg.C) -
Initial engine coolant temperature [Engine Coolant Temperature] - 95 deg.F (35 deg.C)

[ ]: HDS Parameter

Condition Minimum Maximum
Transmission fluid temperature [CVTF Temperature] - 14 deg.F (-10 deg.C)
Initial transmission fluid temperature [CVTF Temperature] - 14 deg.F (-10 deg.C)
Vehicle speed [Vehicle Speed] 19 mph (30 km/h) -
Throttle position 4 deg. -
Other After the engine coolant temperature [Engine Coolant Temperature] reaches the fixed value, both the vehicle speed [Vehicle Speed] and the throttle position meet the conditions for at least 5 minutes

[ ]: HDS Parameter

Malfunction Threshold

The current transmission fluid temperature [CVTF Temperature] is 14 deg.F (-10 deg.C) or less after Enable Conditions.

Possible Cause

NOTE:

The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.

  • Transmission fluid temperature sensor failure
  • TCM internal circuit failure

Diagnosis Details

Conditions for setting the DTC

When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the TCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, the MIL comes on, the shift position indicator blinks, and a Confirmed DTC and the freeze data are stored.

Conditions for clearing the DTC

The shift position indicator comes off by turning the vehicle to the OFF (LOCK) mode. The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, and the freeze data can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
