DTC P05AF:  Shutter Grille Assembly (Lower) Malfunction

The shutter grille system opens/closes the shutter depending on the driving conditions. The system improves fuel efficiency by reducing the wind drag. The shutter is controlled by the shutter grille which includes the actuator with CPU. The powertrain control module (PCM) sends open/close requests which depends on the driving conditions to the shutter grille via the local interconnect network (LIN) line. If the shutter grille actuator detects a restriction and if the restriction condition continues even if the initial learning is retried for a specified time, the PCM confirms the abnormality and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold 

Both of the conditions occur:

• The shutter grille actuator detects a restriction and if the restriction condition continues for at least 2.5 seconds after the initial learning is retried for three times.
• The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 1 output temperature [ECT Sensor 1] is 227 deg.F (108 deg.C) or more and the ECT sensor 2 output temperature [ECT Sensor 2] is 209 deg.F (98 deg.C) or more.

Possible Cause 

• Shutter grille actuator internal gear stuck
• Temporary restriction of the shutter grille by foreign matter or freezing
• Shutter grille internal circuit failure

Diagnosis Details 

Conditions for setting the DTC 

When a malfunction is detected, a Pending DTC, a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored in the PCM memory. The MIL does not come on.

Conditions for clearing the DTC 

The Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
