DTC Advanced Diagnostics: P2183 (2.0L Engine) (2024 2025)
DTC P2183 : Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) Sensor 2 Circuit Range/Performance Problem
General Description
The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor 2 for electrical malfunctions. ECT sensor 2 is a thermistor that detects engine coolant temperature at radiator outlet, which used in thermal management as engine coolant temperature upstream the engine. The ECT sensor 2 resistance varies depending on temperature. The sensor resistance and the output voltage increase as the engine coolant temperature decreases. The output voltage is continuously monitored against minimum and maximum thresholds. If the difference between ECT sensor 2 maximum and minimum temperature is a specified value for a specified time, or the difference between the ECT sensor 2 output temperature and mean value of all temperature sensors at cold start is more than a specified value for a specified time, the PCM detects a malfunction and stores a DTC.

Malfunction Threshold
Either of the conditions occurs:
- Stuck check
The temperature difference between maximum and minimum of ECT sensor 2 is 2.7 deg.F (1.5 deg.C) or less.
- Cold start check
The difference between the ECT sensor 2 output temperature and mean value of all temperature sensors at cold start is more than 44 deg.F (24 deg.C).
Possible Cause
The causes shown may not be a complete list of all potential problems, and it is possible that there may be other causes.
- Engine coolant level low
- Thermostat failure
- ECT sensor 2 failure
Diagnosis Details
Conditions for setting the DTC
When a malfunction is detected during the first drive cycle, a Pending DTC is stored in the PCM memory. If the malfunction returns in the next (second) drive cycle, the MIL comes on and a Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot are stored.
Conditions for clearing the DTC
The MIL is cleared if the malfunction does not return in three consecutive trips in which the diagnostic runs. The MIL, the Pending DTC, the Confirmed DTC, the freeze data, and the on-board snapshot can be cleared with the scan tool clear command.
