Repair Procedure

WARNING: 

NOTICE: 

When working with a vehicle equipped with the electronic air suspension, be sure to set it to the leveling off mode to prevent unexpected operation. Refer to the Electronic Air Suspension System Service Precautions - Refer to: Electronic Air Suspension System Connector Fitting Precautions or Electronic Air Suspension System Service Precautions for the procedure.

  1. A.-

    WARNING: 

    NOTICE: 

    Preconditions 

    Sub-Procedure 

    Removal 

    • Insert a punch (a) through the hole of the steering body cover and push the spring (b) to release the front airbag pin (c) while pulling out the airbag (d). Repeat for the other side. (Figure 1)

    Punch Specifications (Figure 1)

    Installation 

    1. Install the driver's airbag (f) by pushing it in until you hear a click. (Figure 2)

    NOTE:  Confirm that the front airbag pins are securely mounted to the springs.

    2. Make sure the clearance (g) between the steering wheel and horn pad is the specified value. (Figure 3)

    After Installation 

    1. 12 Volt Battery Negative Terminal Reconnect - Refer to: 12 Volt Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection (3.5L Engine) or 12 Volt Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection (3.0L Engine)

    2. Make sure the horn works properly.

    3. Turn the vehicle to the ON mode, and check that the SRS indicator comes on for about 6 seconds and then goes off.

    Preconditions 

    • Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.

    Removal 

    1. Loosen the bolt (a) three turns. (Figure 1)

    2. Refer to the figure 2.

    Tool Details (Figure 2)

    b Steering Wheel Puller (Commercially Available)

    NOTICE: 

    If you thread the puller bolts (c) into the wheel hub more than five threads, the bolts will hit the cable reel and damage it. To prevent this, install a pair of jam nuts five threads up on each puller bolt. (Figure 2)

    3. Remove the steering wheel (d). (Figure 2)

    NOTE: 

    • Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when removing the steering wheel.
    • Remove the old sealant from the threads in the column shaft.

    Installation 

    NOTE:  A new cable reel is locked by a yellow tab for center adjustment. When installing the new cable reel there is no need to rotate the cable. After the tab is removed, discard it after installing the cable reel.

    1. Make sure the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.

    2. Rotate the cable reel (e) clockwise until it stops. (Figure 3)

    3. Rotate the cable reel counterclockwise until the arrow mark (f) on the cable reel points straight up. (Figure 3)

    4. Rotate the cable reel counterclockwise two full turns. The arrow mark on the cable reel should point straight up.

    5. Position the steering wheel hub (g) so that it engages the pin (h) of the cable reel. (Figure 4)

    NOTICE: 

    Do not tap on the steering wheel or the steering column shaft when installing the steering wheel.

    6. Install a new bolt (i), and tighten it to the specified torque. (Figure 5)

    NOTICE: 

    Make sure that the cable reel subharness (k) is routed above the SRS harness (m). (Figure 5)

    NOTE:  Install the bolt and tighten it within 5 minutes to the specified tightening torque.

    After Installation 

    1. Steering Wheel Spoke Angle Check.

    • Check the steering wheel spoke angle.
    • With the front wheels straight ahead, make sure the steering wheel is centered and the turning revolutions from center to full lock (left and right) are equal. If not, check the installation of the steering wheel and the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.

    2. VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization - Refer to: VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization or VSA Modulator-Control Unit Update

    Preconditions 

    • Adjust the steering column to the full tilt down position, and to the full telescopic out position.

    Sub-Procedure 

    Removal 

    • Release the clips, then lift up the dashboard meter visor blind cover (a).

    Removal

    Installation 

    NOTE:  Set the front wheels in the straight ahead position.

    After Installation

    Preconditions 

    Key Information 

    Do the following before starting your work.

    Remove: 

    Sub-Procedure 

    NOTICE: 

    Be careful not to separate the lower shaft from the upper shaft.

    Removal 

    NOTE: 

    • If the center guide (a) is in place and has not moved, leave it in place. (Figure 1)
    • If the center guide has come off, discard it.

    Installation 

    NOTICE: 

    Be careful not to damage the brake pedal position switch.

    1. If the lower and upper shaft got separated, align the marks (b) and insert the lower shaft into the upper shaft. (Figure 2)

    NOTICE: 

    • Do not allow dust, dirt, or other foreign materials into the lower shaft splines.
    • After installation, make sure the lower shaft moves in and out smoothly.

    NOTE:  Depending on the model, the marks may be a numerical value.

    2. Refer to the figure 3.

    Tightening Procedure (Figure 3)

    3. Align the bolt hole (c) on the steering joint with the groove (d) around the pinion shaft. (Figure 4)

    NOTICE: 

    • Pinion shaft with center guide: Install the steering joint by aligning the center guide.
    • Pinion shaft without center guide: Position the steering column by aligning the gap (e) within the angle. (Figure 4)

    After Installation 

    1. 12 Volt Battery Negative Terminal Reconnect - Refer to: 12 Volt Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection (3.5L Engine) or 12 Volt Battery Terminal Disconnection and Reconnection (3.0L Engine)

    2. Steering Check.

    • Check the tilt mechanism and the telescopic mechanism for movement and damage.
    • With the front wheels straight ahead, make sure the steering wheel is centered and the turning revolutions from center to full lock (left and right) are equal. If not, check the installation of the steering wheel and the engagement of the joint/pinion shaft splines.

    3. Wheel Alignment Check - Refer to: Wheel Alignment (3.0L Engine) or Wheel Alignment (3.5L Engine)

    4. VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization - Refer to: VSA Sensor Neutral Position Memorization or VSA Modulator-Control Unit Update

    5. Driving Position Memory Clear
