12 Volt Battery Test (3.5L Engine): Test

How to use this service information .

NOTICE: 

Do not test or charge with the jump start terminal. When testing or charging the battery, make sure the battery is in an alone state.

NOTE:
  • Read the label of the 12 volt battery to make sure the 12 volt battery type.
  • When replacing the 12 volt battery, replace it with an AGM (absorbed glass mat) battery type. Using a standard 12 volt battery will shorten its life.
  1. 12 Volt Battery - Test
    WARNING:

    A 12 volt battery can explode if you do not follow the proper procedure, causing serious injury to anyone nearby. Follow all procedures carefully and keep sparks and open flames away from the 12 volt battery. The 12 volt battery contains sulfuric acid (electrolyte) which is highly corrosive and poisonous. Getting electrolyte in your eyes or on your skin can cause serious burns. Wear protective clothing and eye protection when working on or near the 12 volt battery. Swallowing electrolyte can cause fatal poisoning if immediate action is not taken.

    Procedure/Specifications 

    Software Version 

    Make sure you have the latest software for the ED-18 and GR8.

    To check the software version on the ED-18, do this:

    • Press the POWER button.
    • Read the version number on the screen. It should appear for about 3 seconds.
    • Or you can select: Language> Options> Info> Version. The version number will appear near the top of the screen.

    Check that this is the latest version on iN > Service > Service Bay > Diagnostic Tool Software Versions.

    To check the software version on the GR8, do this:

    • Press the POWER button.
    • Read the version number on the screen. It should appear for about 5 seconds.
    • Or from the Main Menu, select: Options> Info> Version. The version number will appear on the screen.

    Check that this is the latest version on iN > Service > Service Bay > Diagnostic Tool Software Versions

    Using the ED-18 Battery Tester (12 Volt) 

    NOTE:

    For setup, customization, and other available features, refer to the ED-18 user's manual.

    NOTICE:  Do not test with the jump start terminal.

    1. Connect the leads to the positive and negative terminals.

    2. Use the arrow keys to select the Battery test and press ENTER and follow the prompts.

    NOTE:
    • Make sure to enter the correct cold cranking ampere (CCA) rating of the 12 volt battery. You can find the CCA printed on the label on the top of the 12 volt battery. If the CCA rating is not entered correctly, the test result will not be accurate.
    • Select AGM for the 12 volt battery type.

    3. Here are the four possible 12 volt battery conditions:

    • GOOD BATTERY: The 12 volt battery has at least 60 percent of its charge and required no action.
    • GR8 DIAGNOSTIC NEEDED: The battery voltage is below 60 percent of its state-of-charge, and the condition of the 12 volt battery is unknown. Use the GR8 to charge the 12 volt battery and properly diagnose it.
    • REPLACE BATTERY: The 12 volt battery condition is poor. Replace it.
    • BAD CELL: There is an internal problem with the 12 volt battery. Replace it.

    Using the GR8 Battery Diagnostic Station with AST Module (12 Volt) 

    WARNING:
    • Do not charge the 12 volt battery unless the working area is well ventilated.
    • Do not charge the 12 volt battery inside the vehicle cabin. It may fill the cabin with generated hydrogen gas and cause unexpected accident. When charging the battery, take it out from the cabin.
    • Do not open the 12 volt battery top cover.
    • Do not add water to the 12 volt battery.
    NOTE:
    • For setup, customization, and other available features, refer to the GR8 user's manual.
    • On the GR8, you can select two modes: DEALER INVENTORY or CLIENT VEHICLE:
      • -

        DEALER INVENTORY: Use this mode for vehicles in dealer inventory. The GR8 charges the 12 volt battery to 80 % of its state-of-charge. If the 12 volt battery condition is OK, the GR8 states the 12 volt battery is GOOD. If you leave the GR8 attached to the 12 volt battery, it changes to Top Off mode, and continues to charge the 12 volt battery until it is at 100 % of its state-of-charge.

        CLIENT VEHICLE: In order to give a waiting client quicker service, the GR8 charges the 12 volt battery to 60 % of its state-of-charge. If the 12 volt battery condition is OK, the GR8 states the 12 volt battery is GOOD. If you leave the GR8 attached to the 12 volt battery, it will enter Top Off mode, and continues to charge the 12 volt battery until it is at 100 % of its state-of-charge.

    NOTICE:  Do not test with the jump start terminal.

    1. Connect the leads to the positive and negative terminal of the 12 volt battery.

    2. Use the arrow keys to select Diagnostic, and follow the prompts.

    NOTE:
    • Make sure to enter the correct cold cranking ampere (CCA) rating of the 12 volt battery. You can find the CCA printed on the label on the top of the 12 volt battery. If the CCA rating is not entered correctly, the test result will not be accurate.
    • Select AGM for the 12 volt battery type.

    3. Here are the three possible 12 volt battery conditions:

    • GOOD BATTERY: The 12 volt battery state of health is good and state of charge is at least 60 %.
    • REPLACE BATTERY: The 12 volt battery condition is poor. Replace it.
    • BAD CELL: There is a problem with the 12 volt battery. Replace it.
