Removal And Installation

NOTE:

Before removing and installing the airbag module the following preliminary operations must be carried out.

  • Position the vehicle with the front wheels straight.
  • Turn the ignition key to the Off position and extract it.
  • FOLLOW ALL THE PRESCRIBED SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. Refer to WARNING .
  1. Remove the trim from the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  2. To release the airbag module from the retainers, operate as follows:
    1. rotate the steering wheel by 45° to the right and insert a suitable tool (a) to reach the retainer (b)
    2. move as long as the airbag is not released
    3. rotate the steering wheel to the left and repeat the operation.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connections of the clockspring (1a) and of the horn (1b) and remove the airbag module (1c).

NOTE:

Observe the following precautions:

  • Handle the airbag module very carefully.
  • Make sure that the battery is disconnected.
  • If a new module is being installed, position the labels. Remove the detachable part of the adhesive label from the new module and place it in a dedicated folder containing the vehicle details (model, registration date, chassis number) and the serial number of the old module.
  • The folder must be kept for any checks necessary.
  • A new adhesive plate comes with the module and should be stuck on top of the existing one.
  1. Connect the electrical connections for the clockspring (1a) and the horn (1b).
  2. Position the driver side airbag (1c) in its housing securing the relevant retainers.
  3. Reinstall the trim onto the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
  4. Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
  5. Use a diagnostic scan tool to check that the system has not acquired errors during the operation.
