Removal And Installation
NOTE:
Before removing and installing the airbag module the following preliminary operations must be carried out.
- Position the vehicle with the front wheels straight.
- Turn the ignition key to the Off position and extract it.
- FOLLOW ALL THE PRESCRIBED SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS. Refer to WARNING .
- Remove the trim from the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- To release the airbag module from the retainers, operate as follows:
- rotate the steering wheel by 45° to the right and insert a suitable tool (a) to reach the retainer (b)
- move as long as the airbag is not released
- rotate the steering wheel to the left and repeat the operation.
- Disconnect the electrical connections of the clockspring (1a) and of the horn (1b) and remove the airbag module (1c).
NOTE:
Observe the following precautions:
- Handle the airbag module very carefully.
- Make sure that the battery is disconnected.
- If a new module is being installed, position the labels. Remove the detachable part of the adhesive label from the new module and place it in a dedicated folder containing the vehicle details (model, registration date, chassis number) and the serial number of the old module.
- The folder must be kept for any checks necessary.
- A new adhesive plate comes with the module and should be stuck on top of the existing one.
- Connect the electrical connections for the clockspring (1a) and the horn (1b).
- Position the driver side airbag (1c) in its housing securing the relevant retainers.
- Reinstall the trim onto the steering column. Refer to SHROUD, STEERING COLUMN, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Reconnect the negative cable to the battery.
- Use a diagnostic scan tool to check that the system has not acquired errors during the operation.
