Camshaft Position Sensor Basic Adjustment
The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor is located on the rear of the cylinder head. See Fig 1 . Ensure engine basic mechanical adjustments (timing belt, cam chain etc.) are properly aligned. See ENGINE OVERHAUL article.
- Remove distributor cap to expose CMP sensor. If the engine is at Top Dead Center (TDC) for cylinder No. 1, the marking on the rotor cowl must align with the marking on the edge of the distributor housing. See Fig 2 .
- If the marks do not align, loosen base clamp. Turn housing so that marks match and retighten clamp. If the position of the connector varies considerably:
- Remove CMP sensor and reinstall with shaft turned.
- Check by slightly turning rotor cowl by hand, noting whether CMP sensor shaft is easy to move.
- If CMP sensor shaft sticks:
- Remove CMP sensor and install two seals, or if necessary a maximum of three, between CMP sensor and cylinder head.
- During this procedure, check axial play of the CMP sensor.
- If there is a lot of play in the drive. Check the drive pinion teeth.
- If the drive pinion teeth are damaged or sheared off, perform the following tests:
- Check intake camshaft drive chain for excessive elongation.
- Check toothed belt tension, adjust if necessary.
- For Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor testing. See SYSTEM & COMPONENT TESTING article.
NOTE:
During this procedure, CMP sensor connector must point toward rear.
