Knock Sensor: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
Signals from the knock sensors are used by the Engine Control Module for adaptive cylinder selective knock control.

OPERATION
The ignition timing of an individual cylinder can be retarded if a knock is detected. If knock continues, the ECM will switch from the premium fuel ignition map to the ignition map for regular fuel. Cylinders 1,2,3 are monitored by knock sensor I, and cylinders 4,5,6 are monitored by knock sensor II.

Knock control is now adaptive which means that the system will adapt to fuel quality and driving conditions.
