Diagnostic Tests: Notes

CAUTION: When battery or ECM is disconnected, vehicle computer and memory systems may lose memory data. Driveability problems may exist until adaptation systems have completed a relearn cycle. See COMPUTER RELEARN PROCEDURES article in GENERAL INFORMATION before disconnecting battery.
NOTE: While limited diagnostic information is available, vehicle manufacturer does not support diagnostic information using aftermarket scan tools. To properly diagnose vehicle, it is recommended to use VAS 5051 scan tool with VAS 5051/1 adapter cable or VAG 1551 scan tool with 1551/3A adapter cable and VAG 1598/31 test box.
NOTE: It is necessary to generate a ECM readiness code if ECM memory is cleared, battery voltage is disconnected or ECM is disconnected or replaced. See FUNCTION 05 - CLEARING DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
NOTE: Malfunctions that occur intermittently are identified with the word "sporadic" on scan tool display. Stored DTCs that do not reoccur with in next 40 warm-up cycles, are automatically erased.
NOTE: Before replacing any component that scan tool suggests are faulty. Ensure that all wiring connections and harness connectors are okay. Ensure that power and ground circuits are functioning properly. For circuit identification, See ENGINE PERFORMANCE in SYSTEM WIRING DIAGRAMS article in ELECTRICAL.
