Diesel Engine Compression Tester Operating Instructions
SERVICE INFORMATION
The BMW Diesel Engine Compression Tester (part number 88 88 6 110 160) was part of the special tool package sent to you for the diesel engine. Please note that the storage box for the compression tester contains the following:
- Diesel compression gauge
- Connecting line with quick disconnect fittings
- Test sheets (88 88 6 1 10 161)
- Special wrench socket for glow plugs (88 88 6 122 100)
- Small sintered metal replacement filters
- Large sintered metal replacement filters
The attached operating instructions should clarify the procedures for testing and maintenance of the tester.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR COMPRESSION TESTER, BMW NO. 11 0 160, FOR BMW DIESEL ENGINES
- Turn off ignition.
- Disconnect wire on fuel shut-off.
- Pull off plug on preheating time control unit.
- Remove connecting wires for glow plugs.
- Unscrew glow plugs with special wrench socket (BMW No. 12 2 100). Special wrench socket is included in storage box for compression tester.
- Screw in sensor in place of glow plug and tighten by hand; install sensor straight to avoid damaging threads in cylinder head.
- Connect sensor and compression tester with a quick-disconnect coupling. (BMW No. 11 0 161 ).
- Open cover (2) on compression tester and insert test sheet (l) making sure that test sheet lays flat.
- Locate cylinder being tested (1, 2 ... 6) on recorder of tester (3).
- Operate starter until pressure gauge stops rising and recorder disc of compression tester has deflected fully.
- Push recording button (4) to have print-out on test sheet and discharging of compression pressure at same time.
- Repeat above procedures on all cylinders being tested.
- Open cover on tester and take out test sheet.
- Please refer to pertinent technical data published by BMW NA for specified compression test values.
MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE
Please handle this tester carefully, avoiding sharp impacts or jolts and excessive dirt.
Long use could cause contamination of the test sensor with combustion residue. In this case it will be necessary to unscrew the front part of the sensor and clean it with compressed air. It might also be necessary to replace the sintered metal filter.
Assemble sensor carefully afterwards to avoid damage to surfaces of sealing cone.
